I was thinking I'd install distcc on my SPARCstation 5 to cross-compile stuff with some Pentium 3 and 4 machines around here. Has anyone ever setup a similar scenario and succeeded or failed? I'm thinking it should be possible with the same version of gcc but I might have to emerge some sparc-specific tools on the Pentium machines first. Any comments welcome, thanks!

Your not going to be able to compile any kindof sparc binaries from an intel machine, unless you are using a cross-compiler. To answer you next inevidable question, I do not know of any intel/sparc cross-compilers. I'm fairly certain that such a program would be impossible .... (Compiler wizards chime in here if I'm wrong)

It should work quite nicely for you. I have made notes from a couple of packages I have compiled this way. http://cvs.gentoo.org/~aiken/distcc_cross_compiling.html

The ebuilds for building cross compilers are still a work in progress. Some information on what I have been playing with is at http://cvs.gentoo.org/~aiken/gentoo-cross/

For the cross compiling tool chains I would suggest using the same versions of binutils, glibc and gcc as the machine they are compiling for. I have had best rest results this way. I have also had good results building a cross tool chain that runs under cygwin so the remote machine can stay running windows if need be.

Good to hear that this is possible, I'll try and set it up once my machine is up (if ever :) ). Thanks.
