I only have a 56k modem dial-up connection, my ISP will connect me at 31,200 if I'm lucky. I have already tried to do a stage 3 install, dialled using wvdial but emerge sync was going so slow, I left it and went to bed. In the morning it wouldn't come back from the screensaver so I dunno what happened, but I'm wondering - I have a very good connection at work and a cd burner, I can download anything I need and burn it (that's how I got gentoo in the first place). Can I download a tarball of the latest portage tree and system packages and further packages and install that way
Thanks |

sure, just download the files for the package(s), burn it onto the cd and put it in /usr/portage/distfiles on the install partition, i know you can get a snapshot of the portage tree, i'm just not sure of the url |
