I was wandering around the suse forums and i notices that they had a seperate forum for polls and surveys. I was wondering/thinking that a "Surveys and Polls" section (maybe perhaps one in Off The Wall as well) would go down well. One in "Discussion & Documentation" for surveys and polls to do with Gentoo and one in OTW to do with what colour their underwear was (or something else ridiculous).
Also, at the bottom of http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.php?act=idx they have a section with "today's birthdays", "Today's active topics" · "The moderating team" · "Today's top 10 posters" and "Overall top 10 posters". Do you think any of that could be added in because it's quite nifty... _________________ https://otw20.com/ OTW20 The new place for off the wall chat |

I don't think having a whole forum dedicated to polls is useful. If polls need to be seen, the mods can just make them sticky. However it would be useful if sub-forums are ever implimented to have meta-forum that presents all the polls.
What is the 'moo' option meant to signify in this poll as that is what I chose |

So as far i understand, there's just one "official" poll per month in there - doesn't make much sense in my opinion. _________________ Dinosaur week! (Ok, this thread is so last week) |

This is a nice idea !!
but btw.:
The Topics of the Suse-Forum Section "Surveys and Polls" are pretty sh**y.
Questions like "Where do you use Suse" or "How many hours do you use Suse per day" are quite lame !!
Some questions which are useful for new users would be better.
"Which hardware is best supported by gentoo ?"
"Which programs are nessesary for your Desktop ?"
"What internet-address is more helpful solving Linux-Problems?"
"Which programs are installed on your Home-Router ?"
There are many better questions then these..
But we would have a "Good Hints for Beginners" -section or something like that.
SO , MY VOTE IS YES !

well the idea was to actually give the devs some useful responses to the way the community feels Gentoo should advance. The idea would also stretch to things like CMS, a survey with "what content management system is the easiest to set up?" would be a great use to alot of people. As long as stuff like vi vs emacs was kept out of it _________________ https://otw20.com/ OTW20 The new place for off the wall chat |

I think its a good idea. I had a forum for my friends at school, and the poll forum worked very well. _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

I vote yes, polls and surveys are excellent for gathering data, without the need of reading through thousands for posts to get a good look at peoples opinions/choices.
The problem often is IMHO that when you post 2,000 comments to a poll you're not getting the point of polling... |

I definately think there should be an Admin controlled poll forum where the polls are chosen by the devs or are agreed on in another thread.
Cut out the crap and have polls like "what feature is more important to you..." "What would you prefer to have on the live cd foo or bar?" "should it possible to stay within the FSH?"
Thats what it should be used for, important Q&A like that. _________________ https://otw20.com/ OTW20 The new place for off the wall chat |

I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of regularly polling for information, but it's important to realize that there's a large segement of the Gentoo user population that doesn't visit the forums. If anything, I would prefer that we had a poll on the main Gentoo website that didn't require a forums account to vote. We could post links to such a thing in the News and Announcement thread. Either way, this has the makings of something to feedback on the Gentoo bugzilla. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

That's a big issue in the community these days, "most users don't visit a or b or check out c". I've read the discussion about emerge --news and other ideas but people discussing this issue seem to have forgotten the reasons behind this problem.
Sure, to add more stuff to the mainpage gentoo.org might solve some of the problems but we can't add everything to it (that's why we have bugzilla and this phpbb).
We must start to analyze WHY people wouldn't check the forums or read the latest announces. _________________ Please provide detailed tracebacks and your emerge --info when posting compile errors.
