i was copying some files from a mounted cdrom in nautilus and my computer froze up, so i did a ctrl-alt-backspace and i got back to the gdm login screen. so i tried to shut down the computer from there. i saw a bunch of messages about atapi reset and some errors i can't remember. it wasn't shutting down, so i pulled the plug on it (bad idea) and now i can't mount anything...anybody???

i just switched the drives in their slots (so the dvd's in the cd-rw's slot and vice versa) and still no luck. the same drive is not working in it's new slot. i'm pretty sure this is a sw problem though because of the atapi-reset and all the error messages and the fact that i pulled the plug.

I assume you can mount your harddisk partitions.

Try going into bios and resetting (acpi) configuration data. On my AwardBios, its called:
Code:
Reset configuration data:

and set it to "enabled".

and no such thing. it did have reset escd (extended system configuration data) so i tried that, and still no luck. i detected the drive using bios, no problem. but i can't boot the gentoo cd off the drive (i can off the other) and of course, still no mounting of the drive.

I have a similar problem with a Plextor CD-RW. Mine's because it's a piece of junk, I can't speak for yours though. Did it get the errors while reading a CD you recorded or an actual pressed CD (like from a company)? What kind is it? Is there a firmware upgrade for it on the company's website?

Try to use the 'Use multimode by default' option in the kernel. Or the otherway around.

tried both. it seems like it should be the hardware since when i switched the drives it was the same deal and since i can't boot off the cd (which isn't related to linux at all, right?)

so...unless anyone has more suggestions...i guess it's time for a new dvd-rom. they're cheap. still i think it's more than coincidence that it stopped working after i had to pull the plug and all this atapi reset business and all...any help would be great.

the drive mystically started working again, even though i've done nothing....it isn't having left the computer off for extended periods of time either, cause i already tried that before...weird. but thanks for your help y'all.
