Following the instructions but have run into a snag setting up the partitions.

The system has a pair of 18g SCSI disks.

I have my whole disk partition on /dev/sda3 okay and sda1 went in okay at 1024M but when I go to set up swap I get some weirdness. If I hit enter I get the situation shown below.

Anyone got any ideas?

Code:

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sda (Sun disk label): 19 heads, 248 sectors, 7506 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4712 * 512 bytes

   Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1             0       424    998944   83  Linux native
/dev/sda3             0      7506  17684136    5  Whole disk

Command (m for help): n
Partition number (1-8): 2
First cylinder (424-7506):
Value out of range.
First cylinder (424-7506):

So since I got no replies I went ahead and just did it all manual like.

Code:

Disk /dev/sda (Sun disk label): 19 heads, 248 sectors, 7506 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4712 * 512 bytes

   Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1             0       424    998944   83  Linux native
/dev/sda2           425       849    998944   82  Linux swap
/dev/sda3             0      7506  17684136    5  Whole disk
/dev/sda4           850      1274    998944   83  Linux native
/dev/sda5          1275      5519   9998864   83  Linux native
/dev/sda6          5520      7506   4679016   83  Linux native

Disk /dev/sdb (Sun disk label): 19 heads, 248 sectors, 7506 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4712 * 512 bytes

   Device Flag    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1             0      7506  17684136   83  Linux native
/dev/sdb3  u          0      7506  17684136    5  Whole disk

Anyone see anything wrong with that? for some reason my swap was originally labeled as read only but I "fixed" that. My last question has to do with the whole disk partitions....should they be read only or does that even matter?

OK I am guessing you have somthing like:

/dev/sda1 - /
/dev/sda2 - swap
/dev/sda3 - whole disk
/dev/sda4 - /var
/dev/sda5 - /usr
/dev/sda6 - /???

/dev/sdb1 - /???

You could also use LVM to run the two large partitions into one or whatever you want to do with it ;)

I'm a weirdo. I like to keep my mail and home on dedicated partitions. Makes it easier to maintain and allows for me to easily blow out the system and reinstall without losing any data. I am more concerned with the fact that I couldn't use the default values and had to choose sectors manually. Its working sofar except for the kernel compile hanging on PCMCIA

/dev/sda1 - /
/dev/sda2 - swap
/dev/sda3 - whole disk
/dev/sda4 - /var
/dev/sda5 - /usr
/dev/sda6 - /var/spool/mail

/dev/sdb1 - /home
