gnome-2.8.1-r1 is up and running without problem, but it is "walking" I should say.
rdesktop works fine.
I also tried lvm2 which is masked, no much tests has been done yet.

If lvm2, and any associated/dependent packages workout okay for you, then file a bug to get it marked ~mips, and assign the bug to the mips team at mips (at) gentoo (dot) org.

PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2005 9:51 am    Post subject: Another SGI O2 running Gentoo Reply with quote

Hello "MIPSers" out there!

I'm glad to tell you that (after about 3 weeks of rebooting, compiling, reading, trying, configuring ...) my SGI O2 is up and running Gentoo Linux, booting all from local disk. THANX to everyone who ever posted some useful information to this forum, I could kiss you!

Here the hinv:
Code:

                   System: IP32
Processor: 180 Mhz R5000, with FPU
     Primary I-cache size: 32 Kbytes
     Primary D-cache size: 32 Kbytes
     Secondary cache size: 512 Kbytes
              Memory size: 256 Mbytes
                 Graphics: CRM, Rev C
                    Audio: A3 version 1
                SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(1)
                SCSI Disk: scsi(0)disk(2)

Some specs:

Remaining major problems:

  • I can't compile/boot a custom kernel.
  • I have to find a working modline for 1024x768(@75 or 85Hz).
  • ... but the hard work is done, thank you again.

Maybe next week I can get a second one of these nice blue boxes! But it'll have to wait for awhile cause here in germany the f*#!ng winter is gone at last and I will spend much time on my motorbike now...

Grettings,
Scotty.

Here is my 2c

Code:
Linux sgi-O2 2.6.12-mipscvs-20050703-ip32r5k #1 Sun Jul 17 20:08:46 EEST 2005 mips64 R5000 V2.1  FPU V1.0 SGI O2 GNU/Linux

Code:
system type             : SGI O2
processor               : 0
cpu model               : R5000 V2.1  FPU V1.0
BogoMIPS                : 178.68
byteorder               : big endian
wait instruction        : yes
microsecond timers      : yes
tlb_entries             : 48
extra interrupt vector  : no
hardware watchpoint     : no
ASEs implemented        :
VCED exceptions         : not available
VCEI exceptions         : not available

The system has just a 2Gb HD but I am successfully using a remote repository through NFS, solution taken directly from the relevant HOWTO.

One question though... I do not seem to find info on xorg.conf settings. Any pointers please?

O2 needs a fairly specific X configuration to work. IIRC the relevant config file is http://dev.gentoo.org/~geoman/xorg.conf

Why not? IRIX is quite hard to come by (legally)... and BSD has a long way to go to catch up with Linux/MIPS in many respects.

So Linux is the natural choice. :-)

It should be shipped with your O2.

I never received the media that came with the install on my Indy.
and my Indigo2 Impact came without an OS.

A lot of these boxes are just shipped as bare boxes, a lot just tossed out from businesses, who had replaced them with something more recent...
Very few of us actually bought our machines direct from SGI.

You can download IRIX from SGI (version 6.5.22, the current requires a support contract).

Register at their supportfolio -> "Browse Collections" -> "IRIX OS" -> "IRIX OS Release Downloads" -> "IRIX 6.5.22 Maintenance Release"

Course, Linux is so much more fun ;-)

That's only the patch to 6.5.22, you need the 6.5 base media to install.

That can be gotten off ebay, but that's only the media, not the license, meaning, you can install that, but you are not allowed to.

Boils down to, if you want irix legally, you have to buy a support contract from sgi, which costs about 600$ for 1 year afaik.

Got me curious so I downloaded the files (~1.4G).
From what I can see it contains everything you need to install IRIX. Just burn the unpacked tar files to cds (and remember to give them sgi disklabels and use xfs for the partition).
The installation tools are in the first package so you should boot on that.

Trust me, it does not work.

You need the base packages to install the updates, without the 6.5 packages it won't install the new ones. The updates have dependencies on the base packages.

Also, you can't easily create a sgi bootable CD, because the prom needs a HD disklabel on the CD to be able to boot, and the linux kernel does not do multiple partitions on a CD without a patch, so netboot is the way to go.

And you need to install a patch from sgi (5086) before upgrading from 6.5 to 6.5.22, if you don't netboot the 6.5.22 miniroot.
