happy birthday!
just think of where linux in general would be if such forums had been available during the past 10 years... It continues to baffle me - most other linux distros have such pathetic forums, if they have forums at all. I started using gentoo almost exactly one year ago today- I did not know then that the forums were new but the forums were so friendly and so helpful that I had become a total gentoo convert in less than 2 months from when I started using it.
The attitudes I had encountered before (RTFM!*!) had utterly discouraged me from actively participating. The gentoo forums is proof that the linux community is growing up- we are beyond adolesence, even if many of our contributors are still in puberty
May the tone and helpfullness of this forum live long and prosper.... |

only 1year? ive only been using gentoo for the last 3months thats scary these forums have been a godsend for me to use linux ive learnt most of what i know now from the very forum. I used to go to the newbielinux forum *think thats right?* it was ok but because so many people where all using different distros or just mandrake *eww;)* you never really got much help or good help if any at all.
What surprised me the most about the gentoo forums was the niciness of all the users on here, not once have i had someone be nasty to me or talk down to me like im 5.
Also all the help ive recieved has always been direct and to the point. I just hope iam able to give back the same advice in the same manor in the future.
Theres alot of users on here that need to pat themselfs on the back. _________________ Some people go to counselling,

I was just reading an old thread on hdparm and noticed that, oddly enough, almost every poster was Guest for the first half dozen posts or so -- it took me a minute to think to check the date on them, and sure enough, the thread is from April 11 2002. It's pretty interesting to read through this early thread and see all the things that make the forums what they are within the first week. In my opinion, that says a lot for the maturity and all-around usefulness of the forums (or more specifically, its users and moderators), and is a major factor in Gentoo's success.
So much thanks indeed to everyone who helps make the forums as rockin as they are :)

I just realized that there is a poll I haven't taken part yet Seems to be the first thread on this forum. The first support question was probably asked here and this guy was kind of left alone with his praise for nitro (maybe he posted OT in the former praise gentoo forum )
It's really good to see, that the spirit found in those old threads and posts is still a hundred percent alive today. And as many already mentioned before, I really hope and pray that this will stay this way! Happy birthday, forums, and a big thank you to everyone participating and especially to nitro for making all this possible! |

Wow, I just realized that I've been here since May 2002, at the time I had no idea that the forums were brand new. Like other people who have posted in this thread, These forums have been one of my only resour ces from going to a frightened noobie to a fairly confident Linux User, I haven't booted into Windows since shortly after I joined these forums about a year ago. (of course it's still there for Emergencies ) |
