Here is an old unresolved thread about duplicate avatars: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-79589.html
I am simply proposing we start by removing Agent Smith, the most glaring offender.
Anyone who _really_ wants it is free to find an archived copy somewhere and uploaded it. But removing it from the pre-installed avatars will seriously cut down on [future] dupes...

Eh? No. What's the problem? Isn't it the freedom of choice? -- Avatars aren't patented (yet). _________________ "To have a successful open source project, you need to be at least somewhat successful at getting along with people." -- Daniel Robbins |

I just edited my post to point that out, which should resolve your objection... |

Yes, Agent Smith died in the matrix and now it is time for him to die in the Gentoo forums. _________________ Registered Linux user# 375038. |

| IMHO duplicate stock avatars are a good way to recognize people who aren't so much in to this internet community stuff anyways and just use forums for technical support (what a scary idea!). People who care enough about their web presence can and will come up with something more imaginative than agent smith. |

I was so lazy that I had mine done by another Even though that, it is personalized. |

I also feel that it's sometimes tiring to distinguish the several Agent Smiths in a single thread, but I don't agree with the idea of limiting the choice and as the numbers show many people like Agent Smith. I would expect that there were more supporters of Neo than Agent Smith, but that's life!
Seriously, my avatar was not made by me, but I really like this picture from kdm user logos. I can't prevent anyone from using it and I feel that I have the right to use it. I'm not trying to steal the pic from kde and if the forums allowed, I would put in the profile its origin. Furthermore, I never tried to hide its origin and the single time I was asked for it, I quickly replied. I like this picture because to me this avatar represents a way of life, a stance and I think it really suits me.
So, if I was the first user using it, something I have no reason to believe, why should I prevent others from using it? However, I agree that if I used a personal photo, others should not be given the right to use it. Why should I allow anyone else to use my photo in their avatars? But as long as the avatar is a drawing with no relation to reality, why not?
About the discussion on avatar and names, I too am quick in associating avatars with names, but that doesn't prevent me to distinguish users with the same avatar or to sometimes confuse people with different avatars. In my early days here in the forums, I confused a lot Deathwing00 with Earthwings despite their different avatars. However, I think I spotted Deathwing00 last change of avatar in the same day it happened. _________________ Jorge.

I don't think I've seen an Agent Smith avatar during my time here. Perhaps once or twice... _________________ "Mr Thomas Edison has been up on the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph." --Pall Mall Gazette (1889)

actually - there was some kind of lawsuit in Germany about either nickname or avatar... (Sorry, I can't find source anymore).
But anyway, I never liked Agent Smith (because of another board), so let's don't remove Agent Smith but all use Neo-avatars _________________ Nothing is easier than being busy - and nothing more difficult than being effective. |
