I have a clean install of gentoo on my powermac g4 (sawtooth) and the system is now periodically locking up. No errors in any logs, nothing on console, it just freezes. This happens in both console and if I am ssh'd to the system.

I noticed it while trying to emerge xfree. It froze on a package, I just thought it was a glitch so I rebooted, and emerged the package it locked on by itself and it was fine. So I continued the emerge for xfree, well it froze again last night, froze again this morning, I even ssh'd t the box and tried it (thinking maybe a video problem) and it does it over ssh as well. It doesn't appear to be any specific package, as it will do it on nearly everything if given enough time.

So is there any way I can narrow this down? None of my logs indicate any problems at all with the system, no errors on anything.

The system itself is pretty much stock, besides a new hard drive. It has 512 megs of ram, it runs fine (in X and classic) this issue is specific to linux. My first guess is a kernel problem but without any errors I don't even know where to start.

I wouldn't hit the software boards with this problem; my Sawtooth 450 was shot to shit, overnight. After $500 in _parts_ through Apple, I finally bought a PowerBook. Turns out the problem was the processor, but it hosed a chip on the motherboard which Apple has since removed. I couldn't even upgrade the firmware after a while with these spontaneous lockups.

You wouldn't happen to be interested in a brand-new 1GHz Sonnet upgrade chip, dear friend? :D

What kernel are you using? I'm not completely happy with ppc-sources-benh-2.4.20-r10, I had a strange lockup on my iBook as well.
I'm using r9 for now without any such problem.

i'm running 2.4.20-ppc-r3, i didn't use one of the pre-compiled deals. i've never been too happy with any of those. i tried the most recent benh and bk builds and neither worked well on the box. compiling my own seems to yield the best results (minus this random freeze issue).

anyway, i do think its a kernel issue and not a hardware problem. osX and classic alwaysd ran perfect on here. only since last night and gentoo has it been acting up. i'll try and double check my kernel options and recompile and see what happens.

if anyone has a suggestion for a pre-compiled kernel let me know, its a bone stock g4 sawtooth (400mhz). nothing special

PostPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2005 2:40 pm    Post subject: Same lockup with my G4 but with 2.6 kernel Reply with quote

I was about ready to post a new thread about the lock up on my G4/400 GHz with a Gentoo 2.6 kernel (2.6.10-gentoo-r6). I get exactly the same results as you and in the same state of wondering where to check next. I have /var/log/messages, kernel config file, and output from the "top" command I got while sshing in, but I'll only post that--on possibly a new thread--if I hear you didn't find any solution either. You figure out anything?

If you have preempt enabled, disable it as it can cause lockups.

Also, can you check your kernel log for errors?
Is the machine completely locked or can you still ssh in?
Can you provide your kernel configuration?

Thanks,
-Joe

Thanks for being willing to help out! Here are some answers to your questions.

1. I don't have preempt set in the config file, i.e.,
Code:

# CONFIG_PREEMPT is not set

2. When the machine locks, it really locks. Ongoing ssh sessions into it from a nearby Mac OS terminal die too and the machine's display no longer gets a signal so it blanks out. No key strokes bring it back to life, outside the power on button.

Since I know Linux more from a user perspective than a system admin one, and I wanted to know what was happening when it locked up, I was running "top" in my ssh window to see what has going on. Here are a couple of dumps that were left on the screen of the sshing Mac that could possibly be saying something about what happened when the crashes occurred.

I note that the load average is high on the first crash. As a first-hand observation, it seemed to be crashing during emerge a lot. Painfully, after most of the action was over, i.e., with --sync after getting the info from the network and performing the cache update, and with --world or some other install, it would crank through all the compilations and then seems to die just afterword, perhaps on updating ld.so.cache (or whatever it's called). As an example, I was able to installed kde-base, but it took several tries. I never died during compilation, only during some final step.

As for the kernel log, when I look at /var/log/messages, I have a TON of evbug.c messages. Thanks to searching on these forums, I know what to do to eliminate them now. I just don't have time to eliminate all those stupid evbug.c messages from the huge messages file I have currently, but I put a copy of that file with the first several thousand of them taken away at:
this temporarly url. Warning: the file is about 21 MB in it's current state. I'll try to post something more reasonable tomorrow or later tonight.

3. Here is my kernel config file:

I have stripped out the "evbug.c" and "IN from bad port 64" lines from the message file now. It still is at the same temporarly URL. Looking at the stripped down log, I see a couple of interesting things:
Code:

Mar 20 18:06:54 audi pmac_zilog: 0.6 (Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>)
Mar 20 18:06:54 audi pmac_zilog: i2c-modem detected, id: 1
Mar 20 18:06:54 audi pmac_zilog: Error registering serial device, disabling pmac_zilog.

and
Code:

Mar 21 02:50:36 audi rc-scripts: Your gcc has a bug with GCC_SPECS.
Mar 21 02:50:36 audi rc-scripts: Please re-emerge gcc.
Mar 21 02:50:36 audi rc-scripts: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68395

The first is re-occurring. The second was a one-time event. Unfortuantely, I am not experienced enough to see what the problem is. As far as I can tell, there is no clear sign as to the fact the system crashed.

PostPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2005 6:33 pm    Post subject: Instability on G4 because of emerge/portage? Reply with quote

I have compiled a new kernel (based on LiveCD 2004.3 and G4) and it appears to be stable...except when doing emerge :x ! From a remote ssh I have watched as my
Code:
emerge --sync
or
Code:
emerge --update world
have ended up disabling the display/keyboard/mouse attached to the machine or at worst completely shut off the power to the machine. (Now that's what I call a real crash!) Most often, its the former kind of crash, so I still have my ssh session available.

In any event, if I don't run "emerge", everything runs fine! I have a working KDE environment and it seems quite fast.

What gives with emerge/portage? and most importantly, HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG? I have found no error sin /var/log/messages or /var/log/emerge.log

I would like to BELIEVE in Gentoo, but currently, I'm starting to waver. Please help me not loose faith!

Here are some "top" commands run remotely from ssh that were frozen at the time the machine crashed. I'm not sure where else to look.

Example 1: dies on portageq (after all the compiling and such is done)
Code:

top - 20:12:12 up  6:08,  3 users,  load average: 1.52, 1.88, 2.00
