Whenever I try any kernel I've compiled myself or copied to /boot from the CD, I always get panics. I'm trying the CMD IDE workaround someone mentioned before but I'm compiling Samba right now and that's got time priority, so if that doesn't work, does someone have a 2.4 kernel config file I could filch and look at to see what the hell I'm doing wrong?
Thanks. |

I had fun there too..
I used (this was a while ago) Vanilla-Sources 2.4.27
Kernel setup for use with EXT3 File systems only... and network card support for an extra PCI network card (that worked really well too)
Anyway you can find my .config file here: http://www.iscatech.plus.com/gentoo/config-2.4.27.txt
if you need to just save it and rename .config
Hope that helps
PS this is actualy for an Ultra 10 with a Creator 3d card.. but that shouldnt matter much just make sure your graphics support is right for your machine _________________ Toady

Would it make a difference if I have a TV Wonder plugged into the odd PCI slot? |

Well, here's a thing.
I had my Ultra on its side on the floor for a few days while I acquired a table. I got the table. It's now being a desktop like it's supposed to. And, what hey, the kernel boots off the hard drive now. Granted, it asks for a password and I don't remember setting one, but now I know it works and I'm not sad and wanting to leave it alone for a while. Go figure. Thanks for the help, I'm keeping those config files stashed away just in case. |

Well that is mighty odd..
My Kernel config does work fine with 2.4.31 (as I compiled it on thursday ) and the addition of the GFX card shouldnt matter.
Why it works now and didnt work before - well I have no idea but I am glad you got it sorted. _________________ Toady
