When my system boots I get the message that devfs should be compiled into the kernel. I have compiled it in along with code maturity and still get the message. I have read many posts about this but still have no resolution. I am sure that I am getting the updated kernel to /boot because I was having nic problems. Some posts made mention of verifying code maturity in the .config file, but I do not know where this file is. Any help with this error message would be helpful.

The message is a long paragraph stating that Gentoo Linux is designed to use devfs and some script has detected that it is not compiled into the kernel and I need to do so.
I checked the /usr/src/linux/.config file and it shows that is is enabled with the following lines:
CONFIG_DEVFS_FS=y
CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT=y
CONFIG_DEVFS_DEBUG=y
CONFIG_PROC_FS=y
CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS=y
All thoughts appreciated.

Finally got it working. Not mounting /boot on my last kernel upgrade was the problem. It is strange though because I could cd /boot ok and do an ls command and see the bzImage file but not the Grub directory.
It is getting better.

Disable the DEVFS_MOUNT and DEVFS_DEBUG options. The Gentoo startup scripts mount /dev, so don't let the kernel do it for you. Also, you won't be debugging it, so don't include the debugging information.
As far as being able to cd /boot, that makes sense, because /boot is a normal directory that can hold whatever unless something is mounted onto it. So, you can copy stuff to /boot, even if it's not mounted; instead of going to your boot partition, it'll just go to the root. |
