Hello,
I wonder whether I am supposed to use udev on sparc64 since devfs is still mentioned in the sparc installation manual. |

Only if you use a 2.6 series kernel can you use udev. The default for sparc on gentoo is 2.4 so you should follow the manuel when it states Gentoo Linux SPARC Handbook wrote: | If you are using a 2.4 kernel and are installing Gentoo from stage 3, there are a few things you need to do. Since Gentoo now uses udev by default and udev is not supported by 2.4 kernels, you will have to make use of devfsd and remove udev.
Code Listing 1: Installing devfsd
(For those using 2.4.x kernels with a stage 3 install)
# emerge --unmerge udev
# emerge devfsd |

question about running a 2.6 system on SPARC64, how do I stop my profile being lost, causing portage to want to revert to 2.4 headers, everytime I sync portage? |

re: headers
simple...add keyword
Code: | /etc/portage/package.keywords:sys-kernel/linux-headers x86 |
re: udev
devfs is obsoleted in 2.6.13 anyhow...so if u want 2.6, definitly go with udev...
i've been using it since 2.6.7 in mixed mode (both devfs and udev)
and since 2.6.9 i switched to pure udev...no problems for me... |
