i am doing a stage 1 install, bootstrapping goes ok, after doing things as stated in manual, i get this error:

make.conf:

CFLAGS"-MARCH=ATHLON-XP -PIPE -O2"(NOT IN CAPS TOO LAZY TO WRITE AGAIN)
USE FLAG IS UNCOMENTED
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
Code:
gcc-config error: could not run-locate "i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc"
error: command ' i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc' failed with exit status 1 #shouldnt it be i686?

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/file-4.13 failed.
!!! Function distutils_src_compile, Line 35, exitcode 1
!!! Compilation failed
!!! if you need support dadadadada..... #i suppose the top most error is the one upside

well if i cant solve this I ll do stage 3 install and run with it

Those CFLAGS and CHOST look 100% Kosher. Can you post the full output from "emerge --info"?

Check to see that you have the right make.profile selected:

Code:
ls -l /etc/make.profile

It should point to something like /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 or maybe a newer release.

Also, try running:
Code:
gcc-config -l

This will list all the profiles for gcc...make sure you have a valid gcc version selected.

I'm running into the same problem, anyone got a clue as to why file starts compiling with i686-... and THEN tries to build the rest with i386-... (which is also on my machine ...)

Help !

I do notice that file-4.13 is correctly installed on my other gentoo box ... what's wrong ?
