The porthole team has been busy of late and we are in the final stage of a new release.

Threre a too many changes & improvements to list them all now. (I will work on that) But I think you will find this next release a very good one. So browse around in this new version and try everything out so we can iron out any problems that occur.

Requiements :
Quote:
>=libglade-2.50
>=pygtk-2.4
current portage
>=pyxml-0.8.3
python

To run this version get the latest tarball HERE
unpack it and run it from a local directory from any terminal:
Code:
# tar -xvjf porthole-0.0.5-pre?.tbz2
# cd porthole-0.5.0
# ./porthole -l -d
Important: You need to use at least the -l flag to run it from an unistalled directory, but please use the -d flag as well. That gives us more debug information if you have any problems.

Quick highlights:
Quote:

-- There are some right click menus

-- Can be run as a user and sync/emerge, etc.

-- A Configuration interface now exits & operational

-- i18n now implemented (translations being worked on, If you are capable, please consider helping)

-- The terminal is now interactive, so emerge -a will work as well as packages that require accepting a user end license aggreement. But I would not recommend it as a general purpose terminal.

-- A plug-in interface. I have included a profuse plugin pre-installed into porthole. But it assumes you have profuse already installed. An ebuild for it will be available soon.

-- porthole-0.4.1 has been installed and run on a sparc system, so please try it out on sparc systems. Let us know if there are any problems encountered.

Translators now needed as i18n is now fully implemented. So far we can get several translations included in the next release.

Probably the easiest way to make the translations is to use a package like poedit and
open a new catalog from pot files ==> ~/porthole-0.5.0/i18n/messages.pot .

Note: the %s and %d are string and numerical markers that dynamic information will be substituted into the string being edited. Placement of those markers may need to change for proper translation. The help pages will most likely need new html files with new screenshot images. Unless someone knows of a better way. We will begin changing the code to check for the correct language subdirectory.

Set the encoding method to utf-8 or special charachters may not be displayed properly.
Save the new file as <lang_LANG>.po Poedit will automatically create the .mo file. poedit should name the file correctly automatically.

To test the translation file copy it to the appropriately created directories under the i18n directory and rename it to porthole.mo

eg.:
Quote:

porthole-0.5.0/i18n/vi/LC_MESSAGES/porthole.mo

Later as we make corrections to things we did not get right the first time :oops:

You can re-open your <lang>.po file and Update Catalog from pot file and choose messages.pot

We will have a revised messages.pot out again soon with the corrections.

Translators list:
Quote:
Vietnamese : bicolao <= Done, Thank you :)
Norwegian : lnxz
Polish : Riklaunim <= Done, Thank you :)
Spanish : codergeek42
German : Psy' <= Done, Thank you :)
French : memoi2001 <= Done, Thank you :)
Italian : Dhaki
Russian : zortech <= Done, Thank you :)

Gotta go, try it out and report any problems you have. Remember that this version is not yet installable. (that portion needs to be updated yet)

Update: Tommy has been busy and I believe has the installer updated and an ebuild ready. We are just waiting to make some corrections to some i18n code handilng that we did not get right the first time sine we are both new to i18n. This has been a learning experience :)

I'm translating messages.pot to Vietnamese now. But how to test it?

messages.mo doesn't seem to get loaded, porthole.mo works for me. I'd try the german translation.

The porthole bug tracker at http://sourceforge.net/projects/porthole/ is the best place for bugs to be posted :).

If the translated and compiled .mo file is porthole/i18n/nl/LC_MESSAGES/porthole.mo it should work correctly with the environment variable LC_ALL="nl_NL@euro"...

None of the porthole devs have had any translation experience, so we'd be grateful for any input if we've done something wrong :).

OK. So I take it that no one has had any problems at all with running porthole? Other than finding one unmarked gettext string. :D

For those of you that are doing some translations it may be best to get a cvs checkout and update the translations file with the latest change. If you are using poedit, I believe I saw in its help pages that it has a capability for handling updates.

Thank you bicolao for the Vietnamese translation. I see that messiliac just added it to the cvs.

We should have an ebuild up for testing by the end of the week if there are no other problems with the way porthole is working for people.

No, you don't need to do porthole.pot. I forgot to clean that one out. It is an old one.

messages.pot is the up to date one, (nearly) Someone found one string that was not marked for translation. The completely up to date file is in cvs.

It looks like there was an old "porthole.pot" file included in porthole-0.5.0_pre1 that shouldn't have been there. To clarify:

  • The current translatable strings for porthole are in the "messages.pot" file.
  • The compiled .mo file must be named "porthole.mo" and can be placed in "i18n/<lang>/LC_MESSAGES/" for testing.

So i18n/messages.pot -> i18n/<lang>.po (generally) -> i18n/<lang>/LC_MESSAGES/porthole.mo for testing.

The <lang>.po file is the one we need.

If anyone has started translating porthole.pot in stead of messages.pot and is using poedit, you may still be able to keep most of the work by opening the <lang>.po file and using "Catalog > Update from POT file" (choosing messages.pot).

Sorry for any confusion :?.

You can send it to dol-sen@telus.net if nothing else will work. The best way is to upload it on our bug tracker at sourceforge which is done via a web browser.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/porthole/

Thank you all for your efforts.

We will have an ebuild for porthole-0.5.0_pre2 out later this weekend with the translations that are completed. as well as a couple bug fixes.

I have your messages.mo file and renamed it to pl.mo but I need the pl.po file with your editable translations to add to our cvs.

memoi2001 I have the 2 translation files thank you :)

It seems that we need a couple more things translated for the porthole.desktop file

Quote:
Here an german translation for Name and Comment, be
sure to safe porthole.desktop in UTF8, e.g. test it
with "file porthole.desktop".
Name[de]=Die Porthole Portage Oberfläche
Comment[de]=Eine GTK-basierende Oberfläche zum Gentoo package management system

So for those of you capable, can you post the 2 translations here for the language(s) you are able so we can add them to the .dektop file.

Code:

Name=The Porthole Portage Frontend
Comment=Use a GTK-based frontend to the Gentoo package management system

Thank you

I think there's a little mistake in your last line. I would suggest :

Code:
Comment[fr]=Une appli graphique GTK pour le système de gestion de packetages de Gentoo

(you would have probably corrected it anyway)
