Why is there a dev-java/sun-jdk and a dev-java/sun-j2sdk?

sun-jdk is the precompiled binary java that portage installs. This one does not currently work with mozilla's built with gcc-3.2 sun-j2sdk is the source based java that portage compiles for you. If you really want a java made by sun, that works with mozilla, the j2sdk is for you. Alternatively you can use the latest blackdown (1.4.1) which works just fine with mozilla without requiring it to be built from scratch. |

I guess all I really want is something to do java development with. I've always used the Sun JDK but I guess for my purposes (n00b java programmer) I can use blackdown. Either way, a binary distro is fine for me.

I'm using j2sdk because like yokem said, you can't use the binary version's jre with mozilla. |
