After upgrading to gentoo kernel 2.5.12-gentoo-r6, I can no longer get vmware to confiure itself.
Error message:
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config10/vmmon-only'
Unable to make a vmmon module that can be loaded in the running kernel:
insmod: error inserting '/tmp/vmware-config10/vmmon.o': -1 Unknown symbol in module
There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the
set of C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to
rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory.

For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please
visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and
"http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/prebuilt_modules_linux.html".

Execution aborted.

This is what I have done so far:

1. updated gcc
2. installed vmware-any-any-update93 patch
3. recompiled the kernel

Nothing has worked. If anyone knows of a solution please help.
Thank you in advance.

VMware can sometimes be a pain like this, ive seen it on a number of occaisions (tho not lately, thankfully).

I assume you meant 2.6.12-gentoo-r6, surely no-one would still be running 2.5 now

Make sure the kernel was compiled with the same toolchain (including gcc version) as the vmware modules will be. I have never used the vware-any-any-update patch, what vmware version are you using? I dont think ive seen this problem since VMware 5 was released...

If this doesnt work you might need to rebuild your toolchain, then recompile the kernel and try vmware again. There is a good script on these forums called tcupdate.sh that will build the toolchain in the right order.

Hope it helps :)

Once again, I hope you mean 2.6.12
I found if you
Code:
emerge vmware-workstation
it will pull in the any-update patch, and it will just work.
