Hello,
When I try booting up the minimal LiveCD 2005.0 on my G4/400MHz it hangs with the message:
"PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 1 of device 0001:11:02.0". It turns out the PCI in question is a Radeon 9200.
Has anyone else had this problem and found a workaround?
Background:
The same systems boots from the LiveCD 2004.3 minimal disk without problems. In that environment, an lspci shows that the device is
0000:11:02.0 VGA Compatible controller ATI Tech Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] rev 01
Indeed, this is the only PCI or AGP video card in the machine.
As a workaround, I have tried passing "nodetect" along with "G4" at the LiveCD kernel-choice screen. I still get the message about not being able to allocate resource region 1, but it gets further (in about 2 of 6 boots), basically until it stops because it finds my root partition unusable. I get the message "EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended". This is an entirely different problem and I am not asking about it here. I just wanted to say what happens on the LiveCD when it occaisionally makes it beyond the PCI error. I have double checked my root ext3 partition using e2fsck and no errors were found. I also find it strange that if "nodetect" is really being passed in that I would still get the message about the PCI device. This makes me doubly suspicious of the LiveCD 2005.0 (or my luck of the day).
Any clues appreciated.
/Mike

Just a follow up. Having heard nothing, I posted this problem to bugzilla. |

I found that using the kernel option:
often (always?) gets beyond the PCI resourse region hang. Alternatively,
always works for me.
Well, at least one step forward anyway.

Just a follow up. A few months have past and I ended up reinstalling Gentoo on this machine using the 2005.1 minimal CD and kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2. Now dmesg shows the same "resource region" message, but nothing hangs. Better yet, the nice utility
Xorgautoconfig allows one to easily set up X to use the Radeon driver. The system is stable and smooth now. Thanks Gentoo folks! |
