PostPosted: Fri Apr 22, 2005 2:35 am    Post subject: Via K8T800 and AGP problem (SOLVED) Reply with quote

Specs:

Nvidia driver:1.0.7174
Motherboard: MSI Neo2-F (Via K8T800 chipset)
gentoo-sources: 2.6.11-gentoo-r6

If I use agp provided by kernel, I only get 4x. The readme with the nvidia drivers says K8T800 chipsets are supported by the nvidia AGP.

So I go into make menuconfig and the under device, this is all I get for AGP features:
Code:
Ftape, the floppy tape device driver  --->
--- /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
  < >   Intel i865 chipset support
< > Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)

So it looks like kernel AGP isn't enabled.

So I make the kernel, install modules and re0emerge nvidia-kernel and when I reboot the new kernel says AGPGART from kernel is enabled so can't use NvAGP.

So I check .config in /usr/src/linux and see:
Code:
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL_MCH is not set

So I try both, changing each to n and also commenting each line out.

I immediately run make and then check .config again and both are enabled. (y)
Something as changed the entries. Possibly another kernel option?

Any ideas for suggestions.

Yes I copied tje new kernel to /boot before rebooting :-)

Found the problem!

IOMMC must be disabled in the Processor section for the AGP options to appear and be selectable.

That appears to be for x86_64 only btw.

Weird because the help mentions the K8.
Code:
CONFIG_GART_IOMMU:
  │
│ Support the K8 IOMMU. Needed to run systems with more than 4GB of memory
│ properly with 32-bit PCI devices that do not support DAC (Double Address
│ Cycle). The IOMMU can be turned off at runtime with the iommu=off parameter.
│ Normally the kernel will take the right choice by itself.
  │ If unsure, say Y.
  │
  │ Symbol: GART_IOMMU [=n]
  │ Prompt: IOMMU support
  │   Defined at arch/x86_64/Kconfig:312
  │   Depends on: PCI
  │   Location:
│     -> Processor type and features

After disabling kernel agp and switching to NvAGP I get symbol unresolved errors whenever I have Load "glx" in my xorg.org.
I have recompiled both nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx and run opengl-update nvidia.

So I'm staying with the kernel AGP, seems fast enough, but I'm unable to set 8x transfers. If I compile agp and amd64_agp as modules is there an option I can pass to modprobe to start at 8x?

Can someone with a K8T800PRO chipset based motherboard post their output from lspci?

This is the VIA based chipset for Athlon 64s, the PRO chipset.

Thank you prymitive.
I have the same board and the same output and the problem with 8x AGP.

Someone tried telling me it was because I misconfigured my kernel, but I didn't think so.

I have an identical output.

I'll look into that patch. Seems the date of message is Mar 2005, but not sure about the reference to linux-2.5.
I'll try it out anyways and see how it goes.

I have the ASUS A8V Deluxe (K8T800 PRO) and I get 8x AGP us AGPGART and AMD64_AGP (not NvAGP) according to dmesg... can't post my lspci output at the moment, but perhaps there's something specific that you are looking for that I can check? Let me know and/or I'll post my lspci later tonight

It just seems that this board (Neo2-F) isn't properly identifying the north bridge chipset. (At least not yet)

Similar output to both prymitive and myself. I'm at a lose as to why 8x isn't working.

Same board and same configuration. latest nvidia drivers and using kernel agpgart (nvidia agp driver gives me worse performance). 8X and playing wow better than in windows.

To fix the unknown entries in lspci, just run this as root
Code:
update-pciids

That's assuming you have pciutils emerged.

This will update the pci device database to the latest version which has K8T800 Pro support.

Still searching for AGP 8x fix :?

Updating to this version resets the BIOS values, hence why they say to save your values.
You have to enable Cool N' Quiet in the BIOS again, among other things.

I know, but after upgrading bios and resetting it my system lock's up after boot, disabling cool'n'quiet fixed it, I said it "seems" becouse it's maybe something else broken that couses cool'n'quiet to lock my system, I didn't had time to play eith that.

Well, just for reference Cool N' Quiet works perfectly here with the V9.1 BIOS. Good Luck.

Cool'n'quiet freezes my systems (gentoo and winxp) and makes my floppy wan't to read something ;) and also it made my lm_sensors show only eeprom data, I can read them in windows without problems. Does Your lm_sensors are working?

What are exact steps which make your system freeze? Check if you compiled it in kernel and if you can read temperature data from /sys filesystem.
