È da un po' che mi ero posto il problema di come switchare desktop, usare alt+tab o altre sequenze di tasti quando si ha a che fare con un'applicazione fullscreen che "grabba" (scusate il neologismo) il mouse o l'input da tastiera.
Cercando in giro per i post di questo forum, ho trovato varie soluzioni che non mi sono piaciute (in particolare premere ctrl+G, che però rilascia solo il mouse, oppure loggarsi ad un'altra tty e scrivere xinit ./nomecomando -- :1).

Sul forum di nwn ho invece trovato questo tip:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

E, sotto la sezione "Serverflags", aggiungete questa opzione

Option "AllowDeactivateGrabs" "true"

Ciò abilita la sequenza di tasti ctrl+alt+keypad-diviso (lo slash, per capirci) per disattivare ogni keyboard e mouse grab attivo. Di default questa opzione è disabilitata.
[EDIT] A questo punto, dopo aver premuto la combinazione di tasti ctrl+alt+/ dalla vostra applicazione fullscreen, dovreste essere in grado di usare qualunque sequenza di tasti/scorciatoia che avete configurato sul vostro window manager (per switchare desktop, minimizzare l'applicazione corrente, lanciare nuove applicazioni, blablabla).

Potete usar questo tip per qualunque applicazione fullscreen (mplayer,xine,UT,nwn,ET,altri giochi SDL,etc); in particolare non dovreste più esser costretti a riavviare forzatamente il sistema col tasto reset in seguito al crash di un'applicazione fullscreen che fa le bizze, togliendovi il controllo di tastiera e mouse (ad esempio potete premere ctrl+alt+ESC per killarla tramite xkill)

EDIT: Uhm, mi sa che non ho capito bene come funge :P
Mi spieghi bene cosa dovrei fare, ad esempio, per passare da quake3 a xchat, e viceversa?

credo che basti attivare quella opzione, premere CTRL+ALT+/ (del tastierino numerico) e poi puoi usare ALT+TAB o quant'altro per fare lo switch tra le tue finestre.
