1) RPM. Does anyone know exactly how rpm works, and or what it would take to get the RPM dbase to recognize the portage dbase when searching for dependancies to install an rpm or when installing an RPM???
2) Is it safe to delete every thing in /var/tmp, like /var/tmp/portage,
3) Can someone please tell me what is the differece between sun-jdk and sun-j2sdk
Thank you for you time everyone

Quite impossible IMO, rpm database is consistent with itself and with the way packages are made for a specific distro, it can hardly collaborate with external world

yes

sun-jdk is precompiled, while sun-j2sdk is the source and needs to be built (with a working java)

To touch on your first question again, you can emerge app-arch/rpm and then use RPMs all you want. Just be aware that there are dependancy issues that you'll have to track on your own because of what garbage mentioined. RPM doesn't know to search portage to see what's installed and what's not. This many mean that you have to force an RPM to install.
