|
|
I've got the linux version of quake 3 on my linux box but its acting very strangely when i try to play it. Sometimes the fps will wildly oscilate between -1 and over 100 and the games becomes so choppy its unplayable. It was even worse util I set up and used AGPART over NVAGP.
My system is as follows:
A7M266-D with dual 1900++MP
512 megs Ram
Geforce 3 Ti 500
The exact same thing happens in WINE so I guess its some kind of Nvidia driver issue.

Did you try installing the newest patches? I think it's up to 1.32b now. Also, try playing it without sound (change the settings in your ~/.q3a/q3config.cfg from "/dev/dsp" to something like "/dev/blah") and see if it's a sound issue. |

Thought this was just isolated. I had a voodoo 5500 and picked up a nvidia. Removed the glide stuff but when I play it's like slow motion. Is this the same thing you guys are getting? _________________ Talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand. |

Is the game choppy or slow? type "/cg_drawfps 1" into the console and check your fps. If your game is choppy, then you should have a very low fps (something like around 10 or so). This is usually a video card/drivers issue. If your game seems like it's in slow motion (you might have a higher FPS then 10) then it's probably a system resource problem. Try using a different window manager, and load only necessary programs in the background (in KDE press CTRL+ESC and check to see if any programs are hogging system resources, if so...close them). Oh, and don't forget to try the no sound trick to see if it's a sound driver issue. |

For people having inconsistant frame rates, I'd suggest disabling all acpi/apm in ther kernel, if that doesn't help try disabling smp if you're using it. If one of these fixes it at least you know the root of the problem and can try to fix it. |

Another one:
Run your X in 16bit depth and play in 16bit depth.
That solved all my fps probs ( 135 with an athlon1300 and a GF2MX). _________________ linux user 65882 |

I've tried many different options to no avail leaving only the most assinine for last: wipe q3 out. _________________ Talk is cheap because supply always exceeds demand. |

try using the diagnostic tools like glxinfo. Try benchmarking other opengl programs/games. glxgears is an easy one. look through the xfree86 logs.
That's all i can think of. |

I've never had a single problem with Q3. I usualy stay between 90-110fps with a GeForce3 Ti 200. |
