Within my limited time alocated for such crazy ideeas, i will try to describe here how Gentoo is mentioned in various (published) books edited arround the world, but especially in the english language.

Today, we have:
Quote:

Linux Transfer for Windows Power Users: Getting Started with Linux for the Desktop
by Chris Herborth (ed)
ISBN:1930919425
Hentzenwerke Publishing © 2004 (341 pages)

The first mention is in the top10 linux myths, as one of the myths is that you have to compile everything in Linux. After explaining that it is indeed a myth the author mentions that there still are distros where you can indeed compile everything if you want to, and the example given is Gentoo, "and the result is a Linux installation that is tuned precisely for your specific hardware."

In the same book, in another chapter, "Which Linux?", distributions are explained and Gentoo is quoted along with Debian among the distros "for hardcore users". Later on, Gentoo is quoted among the most important 6 distros in the authors mind. Then it explains how Gentoo resembles Debian in that it is community-supported with no commercial ties and a strong fan base. In the conclusion of this chapter, those 6 distros mentioned earlier are quicly reviewed and Gentoo is again mentioned along with Debian as "having technical merits that make them outstanding candidates for advanced users" but still not really ready for first-timers coming to the Linux world.

I tried to keep the quotes to a minimum in order not to bother the copyright, but i guess i am also making a service to the author of the book and my review can (in extreme) be compared to a real book review from a very "restrictive" point of view: the Gentoo-ist point of view.

If you find this kind of review usefull i will try to continue my postings and review all the other 26 books i found with mentions to Gentoo.

Interesting to hear.

PS: Moved from OTW since this is Gentoo-related.

Go for it. Could be quite entertaining to see a list. I can think of a half dozen myself.

Gentoo is mentioned in Knoppix Hacks, by Kyle Rankin. Published by O'Reilly.

Chapter 4, Hack #36 is about "Install Gentoo with Knoppix".

Good book.

Generally, the more something is officially "published", no matter how (e.g. if it's just a mention in the reference section of a textbook), it seems to gain instant recognition in the academic circles. I don't know why or how, that's just how it works. Therefore, I think this a good idea. Rock on! ;)
