directory stack from textfile (BASH) ?

I would like to create a list of directories using a cat
redirect, then pop the top dir name use it then discard it . . . and leave the new pruned list (as a file on my harddrive)

Is there and easy way to do this, or will I get down and dirty and write the control stuctures . . .
