I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, and I heard that there was PPP over Ethernet support on the stage1 iso, but I sure couldn't find it. Anyway, on my first gentoo install with 1.0, I managed to rip rp-pppoe and associated files out of the still warm carcass of an old Mandrake installation. For this reinstallation, I was not as lucky. I had downloaded the source of rp-pppoe and the pppoe-patched ppp, but I of course couldn't compile them in order to get on the Internet because gentoo does not have even a binary of a gcc compiler until it connects to the Internet . I finally ended up installing a debian cd set that was one stable kernel version out-of-date, and was able to compile the source. Then I had to compile ncurses, e2fstools, and several other packages before I could successfully recompile my kernel to include the sundry options required for pppoe (bsd compression my ass). In short, it was a big hassle that could have been avoided: A binary of the rp-pppoe package should be included on the gentoo install, especially stages1-2.
