I just got gentoo installed on my Sun Ultra 5, 270Mhz, stock system.

It is using the 2.4.30 kernel.

I typed "emerge gnome" and it did its thing for about 6 hours or so. I then dug around and got X11 working with the keyboard/mouse (so startx works, but it loads that default window manager, with the green windows that have no scrollbars, and the black background, and the clock in the top right). So, it seems to be working okay... but, how do I get gnome? Was "emerge gnome" not the right command? Is there a better DE that you all would recommend for this computer?

Also, what's the deal with the 2.6 kernel for this computer, can it work? If so, how do I go about upgrading?

Gnome might be somewhat heavy weight. You could try xfce or fluxbox, which is even lighter than xfce.

So what did "emerge gnome" do? I don't have the guts of gnome floating around, do I?

emerge gnome, installs the gnome packages into your system but as suggested on a ultra5 270 mhz try something lighter.
To run different wm edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc or ~/.xinitrc accordingly.

mo'ron,

Check to make sure you have gdm installed. if so, edit /etc/rc.conf, uncomment the DISPLAYMANAGER line, and set it to gdm. Then, use the /etc/init.d/xdm script to start the login manager. Any of the non-xdm managers will allow you to choose your sessino type from what is installed.

Squash
