I tried out 4.3, and then backed it out. To do this, I just unmerged it, and then did emerge xfree. that got me back to 4.2.1, and all was well. However an emerge -u world seems to have installed xft2.0 which screwed me up. Specifically, I could no longer run Eterm or phoenix.

So I unmerged xfree, xft and fontconfig and then emerged xfree again. However I am still hosed. Specifically, if I run ETerm or phoenix I get this:
Quote:

bash-2.05b$ Eterm
Eterm: Warning: ASSERT failed in change_font() at font.c:466: etmfonts[font_i
dx] != NULL
Eterm: Error: Received terminal signal SIGSEGV (11)
Eterm: Error: Attempting to dump a stack trace....
Eterm: Error: Your system does not support any of the methods Eterm uses. Exi
ting.
bash-2.05b$ phoenix
No running window found.

I don't mind doing a big recompile as my system is pretty fast. What's the best way for me to completely re-do an installation of xfree 4.2.1?

P.S.: I removed my .Eterm directory and then Eterm would work. Perhaps a bad font entry? But i still can't get phoenix to run. I'm pretty sure some font stuff got messed up somehow...

I would try emerging phoenix and eterm again. If that doesnt work you can unmerge xft2 and emerge the older version.

I got Eterm to work just by zapping my .Eterm directory, which I guess had some font stuff in it that screwed it up. But re-emerging phoenix didn't do it.

what version of Xft do I need? Maybe I need to unmerge xfree, xft, and fontcongif, and then re-do the emerge of xfree?
