Hi folks.
I had a search, and checked my results, but none quite answered my question fully.
I've got a Radeon 8500 (128 meg version), which is currently living in my brothers' computer. I gave it to him for his GeForce 4, due to the absolutely atrocious performance I was getting from the ATI drivers with the last version of Xree I was using. (Whatever it was, I don't remember at this point)
I finished an emerge -u world last night, and realised I have Xfree 4.3, and is said to have better support for Radeons in general. ()
What I want to know before I mangle my currently squeaky clean config, should I try the Radeon again? I'm very tempted. But quite afraid too.

Not if the GF 4 was a 4200 or better, ati's performance still doesnt seem as good as nvidia's |

I'm running exactly that (the radeon) right now and it works fine. Still some issues with fonts I am trying to clear up, but those are probably not related to the card, I have to clean the mess I made |

I'm more than willing to go through switching cards and such around if I'm likely to get more than 6 FPS, with games that I usually get 40+ with from Wind'ohs.
Can't remember what the GeForce is, an MX440 I think. That or 420. _________________ Four-thousand, six-hundred and ninety-one Irradiated haggis. |

if you plan on using the ati driver, use 4.2 because .3 doesn't work with the ati drivers. |

http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/RELNOTES2.html#3 says that 4.3 has built in 3D acceleration on r8500. I hope it works well for me too. I'll find out as soon as I get the network to work from gentoo . |

I'll tell you about the built in 8500 driver as soon as I get the damn thing to work . Now the DRI just refuses to co-operate... says something about a version conflict or sumthin' like that....
I'm off to find out more
EDIT: Seems to work just fine now. I'd just forgotten to emerge xfree-drm ... |

so far the 4.3.0 radeon drivers seem supeprior to the ati drivers. No problelms with mplayer or frozen bubble. Frame rate in Wolfenstien is better.
1ghz athlon
256 MB
Radeon 8500LE 128MB
glxgears ~2300 fps |
