I have a big problem. I tried to install gentoo linux on mij sparcstation 20/netra i (sparc32).
When I compile the kernel (2.6.7-r19) with make then it halts and say's :
Code: | fs/exec.c: In function 'setup_arg_pages' :
fs/exec.c:435 error: 'vma' undeclared (first use in this function)
fs/exec.c:435 error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.)
fs/exec.c:445 warning: unused variable 'ret'
make[1]: *** [fs/exec.o] Error 1
make: *** [fs] Error 2

When I used the search I found a simulair problem, the solution whould by not to compile '/dev/pts' but that doesn't work.
I also tried to downlload a kernel from ftp.kernel.org (2.6.11) but I have a hell of time to get this one under 1,5Mb ?? and when I finaly got it right it hang at booting linux :( .
I'm new to sun hardware so my first question is the gentoo kernel error problem, is there a solution to it ?
The next is the kernel from ftp.kernel.org, what is the size limitation or must it be compressed ? and why must i make every thing a module to get the smallest/correct size ?
I would like to have my sparc running but i'm getting frustrated while it's only a 75Mhz up machine, very slow :(
so some hints would be very helpful. |

"emerge sparc-sources" will get you the "recommended for sparc" 2.4.30 kernel sources; 2.6.x seems to be experimental in the gentoo-sparc universe. |

Especially so on sparc32. I do not know about 2.4.30 specifically on sparc32, but it should build (assuming a reasonable kernel .config file), and later 2.4.2x (27, 2 run fine for me on SS20 (2x75MHz SMP) system. I don't know if any 2.6.x kernel is known to work well on sparc32.
By the way, SS20 is sun4m; I don't know what a netra is. If it's sun4d or sun4c, you will need to get better information from someone besides me. I am just saying that generally, kernel-2.4.xx run for me on a dual SS20 (sun4m) system.

Ok I get the point. The gentoo install will get a 2.6 kernel by default. I will try the 2.4. The sun netra i is the same as a ss20, only on the outside is a netra i nameplate instead of a sparcstation 20. So it's a sun4m. |
