Since I re-emerged fontconfig, some of my fonts seem to have disappeared. When i log in as root (in kde) no fonts appear at all, not even squares. Logged in as my normal user konqueror only displays little squares for some/all the characters on the screen in certain pages, for example www.kde.org!
This is obviously pretty annoying. I've tried re-emerging xft and freetype but to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this?

Try running fc-update _________________ We used to have hominid cousins that were vegetarian. The palæontological record suggests that our ancestors killed them and ate them. |

I didn't have fc-update as the poster above suggests but running fc-cache solved a similar problem for me... _________________ O God, Thou art in Heaven...

I don't have fc-update (could you tell me what i have to emerge to get it?) and running fc-cache has made no difference.
I used to rely on kportage to quickly find packages to emerge, but i don't have it since fonts are broken in root I presume there are command line progs that'll tell u what package a certain program/file is? I've checked the manual for emerge but it doesn't look obvious to me that it lets you do this? Can anyone enlighten me? |

It seems that i've lost helvetica, as changing this to arial in konquorer fixes my little squares problem. I guess this is the problem with root having no fonts show up at all, since helvetica is the default for kde. nice one!
So does anyone know what might have happened to helvetica? which package is it part of? And how do I get fc-update? so many questions!!
I'd really apprciate any light thrown on this

I had the same problem of little squares after following this thread.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=23575
Do an "emerge search font" and see what builds you have installed.
Try freefonts,sharefonts and freetype.
I had to emerge fontconfig after adding new font builds.
backtracking usually fixes my problems. Mostly operator error. Always make a copy of a file ~.orig before you edit.
Hope this helps. _________________ "I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it!" |
