Did you try with -O2 replaced by -O1 in CFLAGS?

P.S. Wonder why so many of our gcc 4 testers here seem to be China Chinese. :)

Can't pass too though changed -O2 to -O1.

I don't know real why so many chinese gcc 4 testers here. Just as some like Mcdonalds and some like KFC
but most of them can't tell real why . LOL :D

No it's not. There's a sticky thread in the "Gentoo Chat" forum that gives more info on it. :P

The toolchain all in portage, emerge -e system with no patches and a recompiled kernel goes

linux-2.6.12-rc3. The first oops with gcc-4.0 since January.

@tchak, this is a joke, there is no such thing as -O4, or -O5.1 for that matter

Seems all right, although like the author said will use a bit more memory.

The patches are in fedora's cvs, did a gcc co and a fedora co, today, applied the following patches:
Code:

   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-ice-hack.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-gnuc-rh-release.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-ia64-libunwind.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-java-nomulti.patch
   #epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr20973.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-gfortran-pr13082.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-gfortran-pr18824.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-gfortran-pr13082-mixed.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-gfortran-entry-character.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr20768.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-libstdc++-mt-alloc.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr20991.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr20742.patch
   #epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr21102.patch
   #epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr21099.patch
   epatch ${FILESDIR}/fedora/gcc4-pr21173.patch

Note if your are using the weekly snapshot, you should also apply gcc4-pr21102.patch and gcc4-pr21099.patch

PS the one in the fedora patchset i.e. 21173 is the revised main line patch, not the older http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=8721&action=view which u mentioned

I do not see why you apply the gcc4-gnuc-rh-release.patch. Also, Jeremy will sometime do a new cvs snapshot, so that should have all those included.

As for that patch, check:

http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21173#c16

(basically fixes that bug, but make the older one reappear)

gccx-gnuc-rh-release.patch, in case you did not know, is a standard gcc patch, which is applied in most of the gentoo gcc patch sets, check it out for yourself, it's to do with the version string of the compiler.
I just want to compile my kernel, and can't wait for Jeremy, to do a cvs snapshot, so will do it myself, besides, I never use a portage gcc, because of the patches they apply, which preclude my development work.

1) I do not take offence that easily
2) I did not say you have to wait, was just saying we will be updating at some point, and I will add a fix for mentioned bug once they decided the proper fix.
3) We already patch it to show a custom version string (I should know, I added that logic way back, although it have changed some):

Code:

 $  gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.0.0 (Gentoo Linux 4.0.0)
Copyright (C) 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.  There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

That patch is only to define __GNUC_RH_RELEASE__ which they use in some stuff like glibc (to control if _FORTIFY_SOURCE should be enabled or not), etc, and not needed for Gentoo. Hope that makes things a bit more clear why I said you do not need it.

Azarah - thanks, applied the changes to gcc/tree-ssa-pre.c from http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=8721&action=view,
using the sophisticated Ctrl-Z method, and now the kernel no longer Oops's.
The previous oops didn't cause a panic btw, and the kernel "seemed to work".

Its a ld flag, not gcc one. (So check the help for ld - here its still valid for binutils-2.15.97)

It has been said many times that setting ANY LDFLAGS is both pointless and dangerous, especially in the case of GCC4. Don't do it.

edit: While I'm here I might as well ask, do I have recompile the entire toolchain if I wish to rebuild gcc with a new patch?

from what i see here, lots of packages still fail under gcc4, but most seem to be working, so i just wanted to know what timeframe GCC4 support was going prime time, will it be in a month? or more like half a year? .. the only reason i ask is because im on the verge of redoing my gentoo install on my desktop, and if gcc4 official support is just around the courner i might hold off of the huge recompile until its added, because i most certainly will upgrade to it, i like breaking my gentoo :-P

Anyways you guys seem to really know your stuff, thanks for what you contribute to Gentoo and the entire Linux (and open source) community at large.
Thanks, Andrew

Also, is there a central overlay with all the current gcc4 and gcc4 patchs are sitting, incase i get impatient?
Thanks in advance!

Wouldn't it be interesting to try to setup a page on a wiki somewhere to list the steps needed to try gcc4 ?
Reading trough 35 pages of posts isn't quite easy.

You don't need to read most of this thread anymore. A lot of the fixes are already in Portage. So unmask the gcc4 ebuild and give it a shot. If you run into problems, then post them here. If you want to make a wiki, by all means, go for it.

i would disagree. i use Wl,O1 pretty regularily. also LDFLAGS would be the property of ld, which is part of binutils. there's no reason why GCC4 would be involved.

the only big LDFLAG problem i know of is using --as-needed with 2.16. but that was patched pretty quickly.

i really wouldn't think so, unless it was a hell of a patch.

from the sounds of it you'd be waiting a while. i'm expecting at least couple more 4.0.x releases before seeing any official support.

mafteah has a pretty nice patch collection. this is unofficial of course.
http://overlay.mafteah.co.il/

for gcc you don't need an overlay. i'd recommend the version in portage.

Does anybody have a clue what this message is about compiling splashutils-1.1.9.4?

CONF freetype2

It happens with both gcc 4.0 and gcc 3.4.3, so I think it is somewhere else in the toolchain, but I'm not sure where.

Thanks, im not going to try gcc 4 just yet, but its on the list of things to do once summer rolls around, hopefully i can get a spare hdd to install it on, i dont have any space left on this one, and ive been wanting a bigger hdd for a while now...

Also, a wiki would be perfect for this, aslong as you all keep the wiki uptodate , for me and everyone to comment and become ppl like you, that can help the support move forward.

Thanks Andrew

It has an error with the gcc headers, that's pretty interesting. xorg-x11-6.8.1-r2 also fails with this:

Oh well, I'm in no hurry as I have a working xorg still on.

Is it just me or is the mplayer1.0_pre7 in portage badly broken?

Code:
 * Applying mplayer-1.0_pre6-ppc64.patch ...                              [ ok ]
 * Applying mplayer-1.0_pre7-gcc4.patch ...

 * Failed Patch: mplayer-1.0_pre7-gcc4.patch !
 *  ( /usr/portage/media-video/mplayer/files/mplayer-1.0_pre7-gcc4.patch )
 *
 * Include in your bugreport the contents of:
 *
 *   /var/tmp/portage/mplayer-1.0_pre7/temp/mplayer-1.0_pre7-gcc4.patch-26518.out
