| Hi everyone. I'm trying to learn linux from the basics using gentoo. I was able to install and configure my system from stage 1 without much trouble. I've followed the documentations further and got xfree86, kde, alsa, and samba working. Yet, I still don't feel "fluent" in setting up and using linux systems. Can someone give me a pointer as to where I should go from here to fully experience linux? |

Well, what do you want to do with the box?
If you want a desktop system, try out different window managers/environments, and configure them to behave the way you want to.
If you have modem access, you could configure it to be a dial-on-demand gateway, and whatever your connection, a good firewall is a must nowadays. If you have multiple machines that you want to connect, investigate nat as well. Read up on ppp and IPTables.
If you want a web server, install apache and experiment with building a website.
You could also build a file server. In addition to samba, set up nfs, ftp, etc.
Mail is always nice to have locally--set up (and secure) an smtp server, a pop server and an imap server, and configure fetchmail to download all of your mail from other accounts.
Then there's dns, print server, ssh server, etc.

| Thanks very much. I really appreciate these suggestions. I guess the advice here is to try everything that's interesting. |
