gah! Just emerged gnome 2.2, havnt tried gnome since the 1.xx 's a long time ago, been using openbox. I have a pretty fast computer. Athlonxp 2100, 256 mb pc2700 memory, and a geforce 4 ti 4200, running ck-sources. Gnome 2.2 is so friggin slow! Im using the nicified xfree wrapper, ive tried, -O2, -O3, and -Os , nothing helps. its slow as hell. top is showing me that 95% of my memory is being used with nothing running, telling me that I have six instances of nautilus using 5mb each, while all nautilus is doing is doing two icons on my desktop.

wtf?

same thing here. I was quite excited by the 2.2 version, all the good stuff that came with 2.0 plus the polish. Damn, it is nice to look at, but that's about it. The interface slows down here and there, for no apparent reason, sometimes the menus will load as fast as they're supposed to, sometimes they'll make the HD spin like crazy. I'd like to like gnome, but it's just sooo far behind KDE now, for all kinds of reasons like this one. My girlfriend is using redhat 8 with gnome and she doesn't have those problems, I guess there are little tweaks and patches we could apply, but when it comes to desktop environments, I just become the laziest bastard around. I like something that works right out of the box, and so far, KDE delivers.
