|
|
Ok, this only happens on one particular DVD - XMen2, while Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets works perfectly. XMen happens to also work on my Windows box, using some version of Windows Media Player. But on this machine, that DVD causes MPlayer to give this error:
Quote: | Checking audio filter chain for 48000Hz/2ch/16bit -> 48000Hz/2ch/8bit...
AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 48000 hz, big endian AC3
AF_pre: 48000Hz 2ch AC3
[AO OSS] Can't set audio device /dev/sound/dsp to AC3 output, trying S16...
AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) (2 bps)
Building audio filter chain for 48000Hz/2ch/16bit -> 48000Hz/2ch/16bit...
[format] Sample format big endian AC3 not yet supported
[libaf] Reinitialization did not work, audio filter 'format' returned error code -2
Couldn't find matching filter/ao format! |
And play the sound like it's a buzzsaw. I'm guessing this means that Mplayer doesn't like the way the sound is stored on the DVD, but how can I fix this? Am I, for example, missing a codec?

I just got this problem as well. I don't know if it is localized to only some dvd's or not. I recently updated mplayer.
I do think you might have missed something in your error message, as mine matches yours, but if I go up far enough I get...
Code: | Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders
Cannot find codec 'dts' in libavcodec...
ADecoder init failed :(
ADecoder init failed :(
...
AF_pre: 48000Hz 2ch AC3
[AO OSS] Can't set audio device /dev/sound/dsp to AC3 output, trying S16...
AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) (2 bps)

Couldn't find matching filter/ao format!
Starting playback...

I am updating my entire system. I am going to specifically see if I can reemerge libavcodec and do a search for dts codecs. I'll let you know if it works.
EDIT: The same DVD worked in goggles, though that particular player sometimes plays videos at hyperspeed. |

Ok, when I scroll up I do indeed get those extra errors. I get the same using aoss mplayer ... , but yes - it works with ogle. Except that, as you say, it plays it at hyperspeed... |

I think I figured it out (at least on my system.) It's a use flag (isn't it always). If you emerge -av mplayer, you'll probably see "-dts" in there.
Try either this:
Code: | "media-video/mplayer dts" >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -av mplayer |
Make sure it says +dts now. You can also add dts to your /etc/make.conf use flags. |

Yes it works perfectly.
What does this 'dts' flag mean, btw? It isn't described in /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc |

dts compiles support for, I think, digital theater sound. In any case, apparently it is an audio codec that some dvd's need to play properly, especially in 5.1 format. |
