startx doesn't load the NVIDIA kernel... how can I 'uninstall' and emerge this time around?
Hope someone can assist!
I downloaded 1.0-4191 drivers from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191
Kernel Tar File NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.tar.gz
GLX Tar File NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.tar.gz
Followed install / config docs. Got a tained kernel error message. |

i don't think i understand your problem.
what does "emerge -s nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx" say?
that's how you should be installing nvidia drivers.

The best way to install the Nvidia drivers using Gentoo is to do so using Portage Code: | emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx | As for the "tainted-kernel" message. That isn't an error message, it is simply a message telling you that you are using a non-Free / closed source kernel module, but it should work. |

Under kernel 2.5.63, I performed an emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx
emerge -s nvidia reports both are installed.
/etc/X11/XF86Config reports:
Driver "nv"
I do a startx, gnome 2.2 boots!
Using Driver "nvidia", startx reports:
Failed to initialize NVdriver kernel module |

modprobe NVdriver returns can't open dep file /lib/modules/2.5.63 ... no such file or directory.
I'm pretty shure these problems are related to 2.4.19 / 2.5.63 kernel conflicts.
I've got a dual-kernel setup ~ grub gives me a choice of 2.4.19 or 2.5.63
I betcha if I just went with 2.4.19 >>> no probs. |
