Has anyone ever tried to this?
Thought about doing it several times, because those goddamn PC's at school only have some dirty winshit installations. they are totally ruining my emacs workflow!
so anyway.. booting from the stick and beeing presented with a functional linux box, serving any editor would be a nice feature _________________ Markus Nigbur |

Don't know much about USB sticks, can you even boot off them? And why Gentoo, there are distributions specifically made to fit in small space.. _________________ open like a child's mind. |

No PC can boot from USB sticks. Boot devices are limited to what the BIOS knows about. What's wrong with carrying a bootable business card or a Knoppix CD? |

yes you can boot of a usb sticks, at least 5 of my 8 machines can do.
why gentoo? i am simply addicted, mkay? ... nah i consciously put gentoo into brackets
why no LNX-BBC?
simply due to lag of a storage medium. the usb stick provides enough space for a running system and some files to work on. _________________ Markus Nigbur |

Sorry, incomplete wording. "No" PC meant no PC lacking the ability to boot from external USB devices. Only fairly recent motherboards support this, do the PCs at your school have that feature? In that case, why don't you 'emerge livecd-ng', modify the script and see if you can create a bootable Gentoo stick with those tools? Might be fun. |

In theory you could put the kernel on a floppy and get it started that way if it can't boot directly from USB. |
