|
|
My world update script just downloaded the latest 2.4.20 gentoo-kernel source. I'm currently using 2.4.19-rx and am quite happy. Must I now compile the new kernel before I update or add any new packages? I'd rather not tempt fate with a new kernel compile, if it is not absoultely necessary.
Some day I may get over my fear of kernel installation. But I have had some bad experiecnces with other distros, so I may be overly cautious for a while.

No, you don't have to update your kernel until you're ready to.
As long as your current kernel is doing everything you need it to, and you're happy with device support and all, there's nothing forcing you to compile in the new kernel. (Though I would recommend it eventually....bugfixes and new features are Good Things ) |

You don't need to compile the new kernel since the /usr/src/linux symlink should still point to your older kernel, and usually the apps use that link to find the kernel sources, when needed. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. |
