Stage 1/3 Installation -- 2005.0 & GCC 3.4.3 -- Official Support Thread

This is the Offical Support Thread for the Stage 1/3 Installation Method for Gentoo 2005.0 & GCC 3.4.3. Please post all of your support requests to this thread.

How To Ask For Support

When asking for support, please give us all of the information that we need to approach your problem. This would include:

1. the full output of the error message you received
2. the output of "emerge --info"
3. the name of the tarball that you installed from

Please Note

To efficiently utilize the time that I spend providing support, I will only respond to support requests that are posted to this thread, so that the answers will remain available as reference material for anyone who may need to refer to them. I will no longer repond to ANY Personal Messages or e-mails requesting support. All Personal Messages sent to me that contain personalized support requests will be deleted without a reply. :(

Please post ALL support requests in the Stage 1/3 Support Thread, where everyone can benefit from the answer! :D

Thanks, and have fun!

Off-Topic: Common Problems NOT Related to the Stage 1/3 Installation Method

 Grub Errors. Grub errors are not germane to the Stage 1/3 Guide. If you need help in learning how to install the boot loader, read the sticky Grub Error Collection thread. Every possible Grub configuration problem has already been addressed in that thread.

 Emerge Command Syntax. If you've never installed Gentoo before, or if you just don't know the syntax of the "emerge" command, then you need to review the Gentoo Fundamentals and the man page for the emerge command. If you still have problems after doing that, I would seek help in the Support Forums such as Installing Gentoo and Portage & Programming.

Why don't you move this to the documentation forum, then add a link to it at the beginning of the old how to?

Well, according to the forum guidelines, a primary requirement for posting a HOW-TO in Documentation Tips & Tricks is that the HOW-TO must actually be known to work as advertised.

With the 2004.3 Stage 1/3 Guide, I had plenty of time to troubleshoot installations on a wide variety of PCs before posting it to the forum, so the Guide was known to work. This version of the Guide hasn't been extensively tested with 2005.0, which was released today, so for the time being I'd like to keep it here. Once we know it works, I think I'll cut-and-paste the HOW-TO over to Documentation Tips and Tricks, and then rename this thread to make it the 2005.0 Stage 1/3 Support Thread.

Let me try this with the help of qemu.

But it may be weeks before I can tell the success, since qemu only emulates a pentium 2 processor. :(

Ha! At least with qemu I can use my existing Gentoo system and watch the CD boot at the same time... :P

And I don't need to have a spare partition either! Yipee.

You're cheating by not using a genuine 2005.0 release-ready liveCD, then. Hmph.

Eh, once you chroot it's just a kernel. Besides I know the Live-cd works on my computer, I tested the 2005.0 beta's as they came out. I should download the new release live-cd though, just to check out the bootsplash. :)

Erm, that's not true. Otherwise, why would you need a special SELinux-enabled liveCD to install a SELinux-enabled system? Not all liveCDs are born equal.

Exactly, it's just a kernel. An SELinux-enabled liveCD has an SELinux enabled kernel. However, this is really irrelevant to this topic, since the stage 1/3 install doesn't deal with SELinux. So, can we please stop this nerd-off, somebody might get hurt.

OK... I back off! :P

You can use any liveCD to install 2005.0. I apologise over my dogged insistance that this was not the case. :)

Not bad. I managed to rival the Egyptian pharoahs in forming a huge geological structure. :P

Now booting qemu with 2005.0 liveCD ISO... ;)

I do believe the initial toolchain build does need to be changed to suite 2005.0. As 2005.0 comes with 3.4.3. Just a thought.

Where did you get this info from? As of rc5 that is not the case.

True, too bad IMHO, I'd try the install but can't due to insane back pain if I get up from my bed (see other topic)...

if you use authorized media, you're stuck with a GCC 3.3.4 toolkit. i've got an old box running a 2005.0 toolkit upgrade right now. it will take a couple of days to finish...

now how's this for an idea -- instead of forcing every user that wants to install GCC 3.4.3 to rebuild the entire toolkit, why don't we just make an unauthorized live CD and stageballs that feature an ~x86 toolkit?

it would save an awful lot of time to do the heavy lifting once, and burn the results to an alternative Live CD. who's in?

(aside: that damned framebuffer screenblanking bug made it into the 2005.0 installcd. :()

This bug does not appear on my thinkpad on which I'm performing a networkless install. My screen just blanked and it was a complete blanking.

No, your right. Looks like Bob P was just a little lazy with his copy and paste.
