It's getting rather annoying to see all that spam popping up in gentoo lately. store.gentoo.org came up with a very "Special Offer": Get a free Mac Mini!. Now we have seemant spamming on planet.gentoo.org.

Well, akregator now has one feed less to check and /etc/hosts takes care of the store:
Code:
$ grep gentoo /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1  store.gentoo.org

However, I don't really want to do that with planet.gentoo.org. Is there some rss reader out there that allows me to filter such crap?

I'm sure Seemant was just doing it as a joke. Unlike Daniel who I think is serious about it. Doesn't he know those things are a scam?

They're not a scam, they actually do send you whatever you signed up for. They just send a bunch of other crap along with it, and then sell your personal information to third parties.

Whoever put the mac mini referral link on the gentoo store's site needs his testicles ripped out. He (or she) is using a non-profit organization for personal gain, and I find that appalling.

Hehe, blaming ian! is hard in this case if you look at his last blog entry :)

And if I'd submit a bug report, it'll be either ignored or closed INVALID cause it's Daniel Robbins very own decision what he puts in his shop. As well as they can't tell Seemant what to write in his blog. It's just annoying to miss some nice blog entries in planet.gentoo.org just because some devs think they have to abuse it for advertising get free stuff crap.

No no no, you're misunderstanding. The whole store is someone using a non-profit organisation for personal gain.

Which one? The one leading to the free mac minis? Yes. Reload if you get an error message the first time.

I have no problems if Daniel Robbins decides to promote spam on the Gentoo store. After all, if he promotes something, surely it can't be a dud. :D

Hey, what about showing a lack of respect for the people that make Gentoo too? Don't forget us...

I haven't forgotten you ciaranm. In fact I'm really pissed off about this whole thing. Did Ian really quit? I thought he got a promotion? Ian was one of the great gentoo volunteers that I looked up to. I hope that you won't follow his lead and quit as well ciarnm. You're one of the other great gentoo volunteers that I look up to. If you quit things will get dismal quick. Please stay and ride this out.

Heh, if I was going to quit because I didn't like something drobbins / the cabal was doing, I'd've left a loooooong time ago.

Good, that makes me feel a lot better about the situation.

I still hope that Ian reconsiders though.

But...but...but...

Ian was such an awesome guy. Would he really want to leave Gentoo because of this situation? (It does frustrate me too...)

Maybe this isn't the appropriate place, but can anyone explain exactly what "this" situtation is? Is there some sort of scism in the gentoo devs? I know drobbins left a while ago - does he still control websites or something?

drobbins has granted himself the right to store.gentoo.org domain for all eternity whilst being under absolutely no obligation to give anything to the Gentoo Foundation. As far as I know, this has little to do with anything related Ian!.
