I like Gentoo for several reasons In no particular order.

1. Choice. I get to choose what I want or don't want on my system.

2. Portage. What can I say? It's great.

3. Documentation. Best I've seen.

4. Community. Great community support here, second to none.

5. Software is compiled and optimized for my machine, not every possible combination out there.

6. Control. Don't have some auto-config script messing up my config files.

7. Education. Installing this damn thing has been a real learning experience even after several years of using pre-packed distros.

8. The bragging rights of having built the system myself. OKm this is really a geek thing, but true.

9. Did I mention the great community?

10. Meta-distro.

I like gentoo because .... ;- )

I dont have to go browsing overloaded ftp sites looking for *.rpm
$USE, try and find decent current snort RPM's with flexresp & mysql but not postgersql built in.
I dont have to deal with rpm dependancy hell, tried fedora recently and remembered immedaitely why I left redhat.
Forums - gotta love em

The only thing that is really missing is a rock stable enterprise edition.

I use gentoo because it has all of the accessability tools that a blind person could need. In fact, after I get finished with the LiveCD for blind people wanting to install gentoo and resolving my problem with emacspeak, I'll be nominating gentoo as the best distro for blind linux users to the National Federation of the Blind.

I like it because I can get TONS OF SPEED out of it! All those Optimizations make my machine SCREAM!!! 8O

Just kidding. In all honesty I like Gentoo because of Portage. Also the community (for the most part, the remaining ones are the 'Ricers' who tend to give Gentoo a bad image) is really good, and doesnt lean on the RTFM when they don't know the answer, or do but just like to be asshats. As much as this is said, I do like to start with a very basic system and just add what I want to it. Most distros contain a lot of stuff which might be useful to someone else, is not to me and just takes up space.

hi, I'm like middle of Reinstalling gentoo now, I totally messed up with previous gentoo :D
(now like bootstrap, posting from links2)

I kinda bored so i decided to post why I choose gentoo.

firstofall, I was completly windowze person,
I used win 24/7. I really never used any other OS. I was intrested in linux, but didnt know where to start. then my friend installed redhat 9 to his pc for the first time, then I decided to install fedora core.

it was quite nice, with all these grahic stuff with GNOME default.
also surprised with yum/apt system too.

BUT after i used fedora for several month, i started to get bored. I was looking for another distro that is different then another distroz.
then I heard about gentoo linux from my IRC friend.he said "its like u need to compile from scrach and u need very good knowledge abt linux"
I really was intresting it in "building from scrach" but when i looked at gentoo installation manual I gave up :(

but several days later looking for other distro, I coudnt find anything intresting then gentoo. so i gave a try.
for my 1st install, took like 7days:D
i started understanding about portage system, linux system, gentoo system. its all because of gentoo, gentoo teach me how linux works. and portage system is the best thing I ever used, sooooo koool.

so thank you, for all the developers and ppl who helped me in this forum etc :D

anyway while writting this looks like bootstrap finished :p

going to emerge system...

#excuse my english pls
#n also excuse if my writting is messed up, not very familier with links2.

And when it really won't work, you can boot the CD, chroot in and fix the thing. Everybody should know how to chroot in since they did that during the install.

Great distro. LOVE my Gentoo. Much better than Mandrake.

I "liked" gentoo. But there are a lot of things that make me feel that gentoo is not what it was....

Now, for example. I want to install Mysql 4.1.10 in an easy manner. What can I do that?............
- A lot of problems with masked packages...
- when I managed to solve masking problems... then having to uninstall mysql 4.0 before...
- and finally!! I realised that there is only 4.1.8 ebuild in portage, and is not as easy as rename to 4.1.10. It doesn't work
because of patches locally for 4.1.8.

I thought that Mysql 4.1 was the stable version from mysql.com since a lot of time, but seems Gentoo is aware of this.

I think a primary packages as is MySQL must be more up to date. It is unbelievable that the more recent & stable version of
mysql is almost impossible to install in Gentoo.

yes, yes I know, if I want mysql 4.1 then I must installi Debian or FreeBSD...

or compile myself in /usr/local/ and getting rid of portage.

We all have little dislikes, but please keep to the topic. This is not the place to air your problems with Gentoo.

Nothing makes me like Gentoo. That's why I switched to Debian.

Well, ok. I think the documentation is excellent. Frickin' amazing. It's the best ever. It could definately use some improving, but it's very good. And if someone needs a distro where you compile and optimize everything yourself, Gentoo is easily the best of the best ever. Seriously, portage, make.conf frickin' rule. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Awesome, awesome, awesome. :P

Even though I am only a few weeks into my life with linux, I really feel like Gentoo has forced me to have a greater understanding of Linux than even some people who have been using it for years and let installers do all the configuration for them. I guess I like the quick learning curve and knowledge of linux that one gains by using gentoo.

Well after a while I ran into this problem; everything is so easy that I just do a emerge sync && emerge -uv world before I go to bed and then do the etc update later when I get back. It runs so well that I don't really get to do anything but surf and play spider solitaire. I likely spend as much time messing with my brothers winders XP as anything else. I have his set to update automatically. I could do the same to mine I guess, except for etc-update. I'm getting ready to hook his rig to mine and transfer his data over then reinstall winders. That is how you fix winders right?

I learned a lot but Gentoo is so flawless I feel like putting something I can screw up on another rig. 8O That way I can fix it.

Gentoo sure runs great for sure. I am way happier and more stable with Gentoo than I ever was with Mandrake. Mandrake kept crashing and locking up. I thought it was hardware until I installed Gentoo.

Code:
root@smoker / # uptime
 21:32:19 up 134 days, 15:08,  3 users,  load average: 0.00, 0.12, 0.10
root@smoker / #

Love my Gentoo.

I agree that Gentoo is solid if you have it configured properly. Naturally if you install something that is buggy you will have trouble but I seem to be solid as a rock. Proof:

Code:
root@smoker / # uptime
 13:39:56 up 136 days,  7:15,  3 users,  load average: 0.18, 0.19, 0.09
root@smoker / #

My biggest worry is spilling something in the rig or a hardware failure. I have a good UPS and a good surge protector. All it needs now is good protection from the idiot in the chair. 8O

It stable enough, enterprize or not.

I think a BIG deal is USE flags. They just wouldn't be feasible for binary distro. That and how well portage works, makes for a very nice system.

That and the forums here are a HUGE help for just about anything.
