Problem with lagging computer...

I'm new at gentoo and I have a big problem... I got a P4 2.533 GHz with 1048 DDR Two IBM IDE HDD and a radion 9700 pro... but when i run many programs or thing.. my computer start to lagg... What is it for problem?

If those don't help, maybe you could explain what types of "lag" you are experiencing and if you ever experienced it with another distro?
