I don't know if this has been mentioned already ( I am not about to read 16 pages of posts). I recall something about changing the website from using axkit to a new package that is being modified for use by the gentoo website as axkit was no longer suitable for the job.
Something along those lines.

That said, they are doing more than just changing an interface design. Otherwise the changes could be brought on line one at a time. It will take time to modify, test, debug, retest, more debugging, the whole thing before they are able to make the change.

well, just in case you haven´t:

Website redesign mailing list

Sven Vermeulen (Swift) has announced the next steps in the process of implementing the website redesign contest results at the actual Gentoo website. "I hope to welcome lots of contributors that are willing to donate some of their free time to the development of this redesign." says Swift, who set up a new mailing list to coordinate the effort, currently composed of the original designer Aaron Shi, the Gentoo developers involved in the decision on which design to retain, and already a handful of determined non-dev contributors with experience in web design.

"This mailinglist is primarily meant for discussions on the layout of the Gentoo website (from which we can deviate a bit, but not much, since it was elected by our community), the structure of the Gentoo website (think sitemap) and the backend of the Gentoo website (the underlying XSLT code and XML formats)." continues Swift. If you're a knowledgeable web designer, content aggregator or generally good with XSLT and XML, and would like to join the group that looks into the tasks at hand, please contact Swift directly.

I like how simple and efficient the current design is. I guess those flashy graphics and whatnot are cool and all but I'm sure it wont' work as well in Links and will probably eat more bandwidth and reduce the screen information display efficiency. However I think a nicer more professional design might aslo make some good impressions on new gentoo folks that check out the site for the first time. It can have great effects on the gentoo community :) I'm actually looking forward to the new design being a graphics designer myself (but too lazy to have applied in this contest )

One thing I noticed when I was doing my first Gentoo install, not that long ago (it was goood, I say, gooood!) was that in Lynx etc it takes a remarkably long time to navigate to the handbook, to find out how to install X Windows so you can get a real browser :)

I think maybe a shortcut very near the top of the page straight to the Docs would be sensible. At the moment there is a lot of navigation to do.

You raise an intresting point, perhaps their should be 2 versions of the gentoo website, one for text-based browsers so that its exceedingly simple to access the handbook, and all of the very well written documents about gentoo linux, and a snazzy graphics based version

That would be a pretty good idea. Maybe something like text.gentoo.org or something. Perhaps even a forums theme for it, woudln't be hard.

I'm quite sure this is a duplicate, but don't find the thread I'm looking for... anyway, see http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20050103-newsletter.xml and sign up for the mailing list. In the end it's like the 200x.y releases, they're ready when they're ready

I had an idea I thought I would share, in hopes that it might be implemented in the new website...and I figured this would be the place to post it

I am guessing there will be quite a bit of reorganization of info on the new site, and I assume something will be done with the documents page. But whatever happens, I think that it would be nice to have an extra page that lists all of the available official documents...maybe arranged alphabetically or something. Personally I would find browsing a complete list easier when I am trying to check to see if there is an official doc on a specific topic.

Just a thought.

I use a text based browser as much as I possibly can. (I am using elinks right now) Good graphics are nice for first impressions, but I like to use packages.gentoo.org, bugs.gentoo.org, and the docs for informational purposes only, and need things to be formatted in a clean and effective manner. :)

What ever happened to this? I read last week that there were a few changes but i ahve been waiting for a complete redesign not just a few simple image mods and text changes.

http://www.gentoo.org/news/20050408-cosmetics.xml

I dont really want to look though all the lists....does anyone know the status? Is it still going to happen?
