... that you can fdisk away the partition from under your linux system, and not notice it until you reboot?

Try it out using vmware and a virtual disk!

This is because on exit fdisk tries to re-read the partition table (to inform the kernel of the new layout), but fails if the partitions are still mounted, so the kernel still uses the old partitioning scheme. (It then prints out a message that you have to reboot in order to make the changes effective).
