I have an Ultra-30 running kernel 2.4.29-sparc, in which I have put an ST lab PCI SATA controller and two Samsung Spinpoint 120G disks.

I have (finally) got a kernel compiled that recognizes the controller and the disks, but there is some strangeness when partitioning them...

According to Samsung's docs the drives should have 16 heads, 63 sectors, and 232,632 cylinders.

However, fdisk will not let me enter more than 65535 cylinders for the (mandatory?) Sun disklabel.

I am using the two drives in a (sw) raid1 configuration, and after building an ext3 filesystem on them I am left with approx. 110G of available space.

So, the question is, should I worry about the partition info being wrong, or can it just be ignored?

I am going to use the setup as a file server/backup server, so I would like _that_ part of the setup to be rock solid...

You need to get the partition information at least nearly correct. Are you provided with 'virtual' CHS values? You could use those instead if you are.
