Possibly - did you a do and install from stage 1? A common mistake is to begin at stage 1 (following the install docs) and skip the steps at stage 2 and 3, leaving you without many common binaries.

# emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

after the stage 2 and 3 are done

If you already have a kernel installed and configured then I think it will work - best thing to do is try and see...

I have encountered another problem.
Most hard drives are hda but mine is hdc. How would I write hdc so that grub understands it?
hd0? hd2?

Grub doesn't really care - it goes on the number of your hard drives, so the first drive is hd0, and the second drive is hd1 etc.

I have 2 drives, hdc and hde, which grub recognizes as hd0 and hd1 respectively.
