Ok, while running emerge depclean -p I spotted ld.so on the list of things to be removed...

* qpkg says that kdemultimedia depends on it...
* it no longer exists in portage
* the description "Linux dynamic loader & linker" makes it sound important
* there is no Changelog for packages that aren't in portage
* some ebuilds still depend on it...

Code:
#find . -iname '*.ebuild' -exec grep -H 'sys-devel/ld.so' {} \; | grep -v 'mysqld.sock'
./dev-lang/bigwig/bigwig-2.0-r7.ebuild: sys-devel/ld.so
./net-im/gnophone/gnophone-0.2.4.ebuild:        sys-devel/ld.so
./net-im/gnophone/gnophone-0.2.4.ebuild:        sys-devel/ld.so
./sys-apps/noflushd/noflushd-2.4-r3.ebuild:     sys-devel/ld.so"
./sys-apps/noflushd/noflushd-2.4-r6.ebuild:     sys-devel/ld.so"
./sys-devel/perl/perl-5.6.1-r8.ebuild:  sys-devel/ld.so

I'm not sure what to do here, can anyone shed some light on the subject? I'm afraid this could be something important... I know a lot of ebuilds refer to ld.so.config and things like that...

My second point, would anyone find it valuable if Changelogs were left in portage for packages that have been removed along with the reason why that entire package was removed from the Portage tree? I think that would help out in circumstances like this. They wouldn't have to be left FOREVER, but perhaps some arbitrary about of time.

dreamer3,

On my system, emerge depclean reported sys-devel/ld.so was not needed. Just to be certain, I ran qpkg -q ld.so, and it too reported no dependancies. I'm searching the forums if anyone has successfully unmerged ld.so. An emerge -s sys-devel/ld.so reveals nothing, implying it has been removed from portage. I'll let you know if I discover anything.

I finally decided it wasn't important and removed it some time again. Thanks though.

FYI,

The online package database still has sys-devel/ld.so 1.9.11-r3.
I have ld.so 1.9.11-r2. Guess I feel lucky ... going to unmerge. Wish me luck.
