Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

mplayer/gmplayer & Xorg, anyone?

  • Quote

Post by max4ever » Thu Aug 19, 2004 1:25 pm

hi, i'm using mplayer 1.0_pre4-r7 and Xorg
all packages/ebuilds... are the latest from "x86"

i have 2 probs:
pls read...

1)if i use Xorg and WITHOUT ati drivers installed the Gmplayer works all ok with default xv output(i have an ati radeon 9600)

however if install ati drivers, gmplayer woun't play with default drivers(the 3 ones avabile from the list in the config...), so i hack manually the gui.conf and put the "vo_driver=gl2" which works, BUT if i exit from fullscreen it crashes , meanwhile if i use mplayer -vo gl2 it woun't crash if i change from fullscreen/window (wtf?)

if i use the x11 video driver (g)mplayer woun't zoom in full screen and the gui has no such option as "zoom" (which is lame since it needs lots of cpu...)

so any ideas on how to make the gui work fullscreen and not crash on exiting full screen? (nope i don't want console...) :?

and yes i know about "mplayer -vo help" thing...
and yes i tryed adding Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" to my xorg.conf file

2)i can't seem to able to show some subtitles ok

it's the romanian(Romania) fonts, but the romanian fonts umm only have some romanian alfaphabet specific letters showing ok, while others are or "_" or some weird character... which is really annoying...

i tryed some diff fonts from the default list and it didn't help
umm what fonts do i have to unpack into /usr/share/mplayer/fonts... ? anyone ?

I have the same problem here since switching from xfree 4.3 to xorg 6.7.0. No solution yet :(

well i partially solved the problem by emerging the lastest version of mplayer (from the ~x86, i was using the stable x86) with it's GUI , but the subtitle thing, still no luck :(

Damn ATi! Their drivers work fine with XFree 4.3, but they are crap with Xorg 6.7.0 (and ABSOLUTE crap with Xorg 6.8.0). They told the new driver would be here in a week or so. Let's hope....

Did you guys ever come up with a solution to this ?

The same thing is happening to me to, it appears something about "xv extensions" are missing or something.

When I use mame... the x11 executable wont work unless you disable xv extensions, and then you get the non resizable, small window in which to play your game (and no fullscreen).

Has anybody found an answer...

The only solution I can think of is to use opensource drivers from DRI (dri.sourceforge.net) - avaliable in portage as x11-drm if I'm not mistaken

well, first off I'd avoid using gmplayer, its a real hack. mplayer used to only output if I set its -vo as opengl or x11. However, kmplayer seemed to continue to work, so I'd suggest using one of mplayers frontends. The newer versions of mplayer seemed to have resolved it.

I've had a lot of problems with KMPlayer showing black screens instead of video for me, I'd suggest KPlayer over it.

I ended up running fglrxconfig and cutting out the device section of the generated file and pasting it into my xorg.conf.

Now I can resize windows again and have proper full screen.

This suggestion worked for me as well...

I know the thread is a year old, but since I just resolved the same problem, I figured I'd post my fix...
Note: This is for a Radeon 9600XT, but should work for most cards config'd with fglrxconfig

Rather than copy / pasting the entire Device section, the only change that was needed in my case was setting

Code: Select all

# === Video Overlay for the Xv extension ===
        Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
# === OpenGL Overlay ===
        Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
This is because setting OpenGLOverlay to "on", automatically sets VideoOverlay to "off". (I wound up w/ this problem because apparently, I don't pay enough attention to my config merges :) )

Hopefully this will save a few headaches in terms of overwriting your old device section, in case you're like me: I.e. Too lazy to re-do it, and have a few tweaks you don't want to overwrite. Hope this helps someone down the road...

Congrats! :) Maybe you should mark the thread subject [solved] so that people seek for solutions here ;)
