Meanwhile. I bought the DVD A fish called Wanda and now can prove that I was correct with the "I offer a complete and utter retraction... ...and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future." quote.

So am I now allowed to ask for some quotes as well? That's an easy one:
"If you gave me a million years to ponder, I would've never guessed that true romance and Detroit would ever go together."

Solutions to my second round quotes:
- This is the very beginning of Dante's "The Divine Comedy", the translation by Longfellow. Delphiki knew that.
- This is indeed Archibald Leech's apology from "A fish called Wanda", as shown to us by Larde.
- The famous line from "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare. rac knew that. Everybody should know that.
- Spoken by Ford Prefect in "So long and thanks for all the fish" by Douglas Adams. zhenlin almost knew that. The Ennead IX guessed "Red Dwarf" which is another fine source of quotes - not this one though.
- Lyrics from "Secret agent man". I have a version with Johnny Rivers, but that may not be the original. It was used in a tv series I think.
So, this quiz has changed a bit. That's actually good, since I may not be able to keep up with supplying well-structured posts with good quotes. So, I'll join you all in guessing quotes supplyed by everybody. Thanks for playing. _________________ Excelsior! |

Patrick McGoohan, the star of Danger Man would go on to make The Prisoner, possibly my favorite TV show ever. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I can verify a point for Herodot - though most folks know Galileo by his first name. Keeping with the war theme - here's another. I suspect many will recognize at least part of it, but the source is a bit tricky -
"The bomb will not start a chain-reaction in the water converting it all to gas and letting the ships on all the oceans drop down to the bottom. It will not blow out the bottom of the sea and let all the water run down the hole. It will not destroy gravity. I am not an atomic playboy, as one of my critics labeled me, exploding these bombs to satisfy my personal whim."

Reminds me of a favorite series (also from the UK), Danger Mouse. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

Ah, the thread's dying! Here's an easy one to get it started again:
"Wiping out the human race? That's a great idea. That's great. But more of a long-term thing. I mean, first we have to focus on more immediate goals." _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

Phong's quote... I have no idea! Still, I'll provide a classic:
"The strength of a nation is not measured by its ability to fight wars.
It is measured by its ability to prevent them." _________________ Excelsior! |

I didn't see that movie in English yet, but that pretty much sounds like 12 Monkeys, I rewatched that just some days ago...

12 monkeys! Of course it is, how could I not see that! One of my all time favourite movies. Perfect from start to finish, in every detail.
Screenplay is by David Peoples, who is a good guy:
Twelve Monkeys (1995) (screenplay)
Accidental Hero (1992) (screenplay) (story)
Unforgiven (1992) (written by)
Leviathan (1989) (screenplay, story)
Ladyhawke (1985) (screenplay)
Blade Runner (1982) (as David Peoples)
- and more!
It is apparently based on the film "la jetée" - has anybody seen that? _________________ Excelsior! |

A point for Larde. Now I'm trying to imagine what Jeffrey Goines sounds like speaking German...
Here's another one from a favorite movie:

The "Cross of Iron" quote is from Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States. Here's another movie one: | Quote: | | You know what I think? I think that we're all in our private traps, clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out. We scratch and we claw, but only at the air, only at each other, and for all of it, we never budge an inch. |

Nope, but here's another from the same movie:

Well, I am going to try and introduce a few others...
1. Where's it going to gestate? In a box?
2. Gentile or Jew,
O you who turn to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.
3. To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose two looks like carelessness.
4. If can fill each minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run.
5. I looked, and before me was white horse, ridden by Death and followed by all the company of hell.
A comment about each I suppose might not go amiss.
1. Well, very little.
2. Read the whole poem. Something to learn there if you can find the meaning, but the quote is there for a different reason.
3. Read everything you can to do with this.
4. Find the poem and read it. The best guide to life yet written.
5. A bad translation, but I can't type greek here. Famous, but a suitable end I though. _________________ --
