Hi Guys,
data loss is something i always try and avoid as i imagine so do most of you.
So over the past little bit if been playign with various backup tools trying to find one that suits me.
my requirements are.
1) fast
2) compression
3) file level restore
4) avaliable from the live cd
5) no X gui ( text menu stuff is fine )
6) cronable
7) compatible with tape ( DLT specifically ) but also would like cdr , dvd, network as options.
I think cpio should do what i want if i can get it setup correctly.
has anyone got any good script/ tips that i could use ??
maybe we could even turn this into and ebuild when we get it looking good.
emerge backup/tape
tape-restore system
extracting........
please insert tape 2

What about rsync?
It's good enough for Gentoo, right?
1) it's fast because it only' syncs
2) you can compress all your stuff before the rsync
3) it definetlly keeps the file level
4) it's VERY AVAILABLE from the live cd
5) only a few lines to get it working
6) cronable
7) put it wherever you'd like, no trouble at all
heck! Put it over a ssh tunnel and it's the perfect networked backup tool! _________________ Lego my ego, and I'll lego your knowledge

not sure how well that would work writing to a tape or a cdrom tho
but not a bad start to a fully networked backup solution
rsync each client to thier own little partition , then backup the whole lot to tape |

If you have to backup more than one or two machines, you should have a look at Amanda. It's not on the live CD though - there even isn't an .ebuild for it.

No ebuild, but flexbackup works nice for me. |
