how big is the XFree source code? according to the http://ftp.mirrorcentral.com/pub/XFree86 site, it is only 56k???

Oh - no, that's a patch. It looks like you have to download the 4.2.0 source code, which is significantly larger, from its tree (there's a /source subdirectory there, but not in the 4.2.1 tree), and then apply 4.2.0-4.2.1.diff to that source tree.
