If you use the sparc-sources it looks like it's 2.4.29 but it looks like you can use the gentoo-dev sources at 2.6.10-r4.

No, but I can tell you where to look. Try the Gentoo Handbook, to be specific, look under section 7 "Configuring the Kernel".

Why is sparc-sources not keeping up with 2.6? Is sparc-sources being deprecated? What would one be losing by moving off of sparc-souces to gentoo-dev-sources?

Check this article in the GWN for a short explanation of the naming scheme for kernel sources. In essence, with a current 2005.0 profile, sparc-sources are 2.4, if you want 2.6, you need gentoo-sources.
Moved from Kernel & Hardware, by the way, you'll get a much better answer to your last question here, I suppose. |

I have been running the 2.6.11.7 kernel with good results for the last two weeks. I just downloaded the vanillia sources from kernel.org. I just went through and made sure that everything i needed for my ultra 2 was in there and nothing else. Just make sure the image is under 8MB and you should be ok. It took me a few times to get it to compile right. Make sure your GCC is up to date and you should be good to go.

Don't download the vanilla sources.
As of 27 April 2005
and

to get 2.6.11-r6 and install that instead.

A Little statusupdate silo is the problem that keeps me from booting.
I have installed lilo 1.3.1-r1 wich allows me to boot even a 2.6 kernel when it is not too big
1.4.8 and 1.4.9 have both got the same problem

Hi,
Ik have been busy for the last week trying to get mij sun e250 running with an 2.6 kernel
2.6.11-r8 results in the following error:
remapping the kernel .... [Sun specific error about hardware]
{OK}
The sun specific hardware error means that when you get this error normally your hardware is broken.
But it isn't as it seems to change with kernel size.
Then i tried 2.6.11-r7
This gives exactly the same error as above.

2.6 series kernels aren't up to snuff on sparc yet.
They don't work well with certain boxes or hardware combinations where 2.4 does.
When 2.6 is good enough for sparc you'll know.
